Heroes - Kindred

Season 2 episode 03 (Kindred)
Dir: Paul Edwards Writ: J.J. Philbin
Yes, I know, when recapping I really should start at the beginning, but I really couldn’t be arsed rewatching episodes 1 & 2 so you’ll just have to deal. And there will be spoilers under the cut.

Opiate of the masses

Published by Fence under TV

I seem to have given up on my Rome recaps. That is a terribly wishy-washy sort of statement, isn’t it? I seem to have, you’d think I’d know whether I have or I haven’t. And considering that there is only one episode left to go, you’d have to think that yes I have given up. I think so. But the mood may strike me again, and I may scribble something down, but I blame the BBC. Showing two episodes a week, while cool and keeping me happy with the Rome-ness of it all, means that there isn’t much time before another episode appears. It also means that the season is now pretty much over.

They are starting Heroes next week. If you haven’t seen it and have BBC2 you should probably switch on. Tis quite fun, though not as great or as original as it seems to think it is.

The Sopranos came to an end last night. I had watched it on Vera on my train journey home last weekend, but that ending made me unsure of whether I had it all or not. Turns out I had. I’m in two minds about the ending. I don’t the episode, as a whole, was as good as some others this season. But I quite liked Show Spoilers ▼

This final season as a whole has been most excellent, and I’m coming round to the idea Show Spoilers ▼

I don’t think that matters. It was a perfect ending for The Sopranos. I wouldn’t like everything to end that way. But it worked. More discussion here, with unhidden spoilers, you have been warned.

So that is Rome and The Sopranos coming to an end. And I’d been quite enjoying the few Doctor Who episodes I caught this year, but now they are over too. So many things coming to an end. I suppose Prison Break is still running, but I’m more than a little meh’d at that show. Tis too silly, and with the constant, never ending stabbing each other in the back it gets a little repetitive. Although whatshisface, teabag? Show Spoilers ▼

And on account of various things I’ve been missing Jekyll which I was enjoying. But then again, I can play catch up, the flatmate has two episodes recorded, so I can play catch up at some stage.

And I have a few boxsets I should get to watching; Carnivale, Twin Peaks, The Wire. Plenty to keep me going.

Yeah, so Marx may have been referring to religion, but I’m not the only one to apply it to telly too.

Let those terrorists know where you are

Via Damien:

Also a bit of a telly round up: Prison Break is back[1] on RTE 2. Course I’ve been watching Heroes on SciFiUk at that particular time so haven’t been watching it. But thanks to the joys of d’internet I got to watch it last night. I wasn’t overly impressed[2]

Hopefully I’ll be more entertained when Rome makes its come back on Wednesday. And Sunday[3] Which might be awkward as I’m heading up to Sligo this weekend. Don’t wanna be on the train when Lamb and Chicken are back on the screen.

Over the weekend there was a feast of GAA action but there was too much going on. I watched the Limerick v Tipp hurling match on Sat. evening. I was cheering for Limerick, on account of that is where de mudder is from, but I didn’t think they win. And they didn’t. They did however draw. Again. So it’ll be a third replay.

On the face of it Limerick have simply trailed Tipp like a particularly enthusiastic puppy: every time Tipp have tried to shoo them away, Limerick have scampered happily back to their heel. Will Tipp finally rid themselves of the troublesome mutt, or will Limerick eventually bite them on the bum?

On Sunday we had a dilemma to face. Watch the Dublin V Meath replay in the football or switch over and enjoy the Cork V Waterford hurling? A peak audience of 792,000 watched both matches, with 342,000 watching the hurling and 285,000 watching the football, according to the Irish Times[4] but I’d guess that most people did what I ended up doing. Flicking between the two and missing out on most of the action. Luckily we had The Sunday Game later on for all the bits we missed. And the Sligo match. Which we won, by two points, which means that for the first time since 2002 Sligo will be in a Connacht final.

Seldom in a woman, never in a man

Published by Fence under Books, Shiny

I’m waiting for episode 22 of Heroes to load up so I can watch it. Almost at an end now. Oooooh. But while I’m waiting I thought I may as well show you what I picked up today in my quick stop[1] in Chapters.

  • Item the first: A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. I’ve heard many great things about this series, but have never picked any of the books up. So when I spotted the first in the A Song of Ice and Fire series I figured sure what the hell. I may not get around to reading it for a while, but it can’t hurt[2] having it on the book shelves[3]
  • Item the second: Astonishing X-Men: Dangerous by The Joss God[4] and John Cassady.
  • Which obviously enough’d be followed by the 3rd, and final purchase: Astonishing X-Men: Torn also by Joss Whedon[5] and John Cassady. I’ve had the first in this series for ages, but only now have I gotten around to buying these two parts. I’m not going to read them just yet. I’m in the middle of a book, and then I have A Midsummer Night’s Dream to get to for the Once Upon A Time Reading Challenge. But after that. Then I’ll get stuck in.

  • I’m not sure if I’m one of those rare women that has patience.

    5. Did I mention I saw Serenity in the cinema over the weekend. It was well shiny

    The fear of god

Published by Fence under Sport, TV

I didn’t watch the rugby documentary[1] last night. I was watching Medium and the Heroes. And can I just say one little thing to scifi uk? Your ads are the worst, and I will never ever buy the new Tomb Raider game, nor the previous one you advertised, Sparta, or whatever. And why? Because you try and deafen me. Just be glad I’m not in the army or there’d be suing[2] going on[3] .

Medium is a strange mix of telly. In one way it seems kinda relaxed about stuff[4] but on the other hand it seems a bit on the right, politically. You know, with being pro-death penalty and whatnot. But then again, who am I to say you can’t agree with drinking and cussing and be fairly liberal while wanting to kill peoples. It’s all good[5] .

Heroes, as I said before[6] I do like and enjoy. But I don’t really like any of the characters, so I’m a little meh. But it is entertaining and stuff happens[7] and it has Christopher Eccleston[8] in it, even if his character does have a silly name[9] But he is good and grumpy so I likes him. But not a huge amount. And I don’t like cop guy. He’s annoying. I do like Nathan, even if he can be a selfish bastard at times, but he isn’t quite selfish enough to have the “love to hate him” thing going on, and he isn’t “heart of gold” enough to love him. Peter is improving. I didn’t like his do-gooder-ness,[10] but know that he is developing a bit of a backbone its all good. Nikki/Jessica, meh, could do more. The kid is alright, the father a bit of a nothing character so far. Hiro I’m not sure of yet. Claire I do like, and her ebil father.

Almost forgot, the girl, Sara, on last night’s episode[11] of Medium also showed up in an episode of The Inside[12] where she played an evil murdering child. So even though she played a victim here I so didn’t trust her. Evil child.

Anyways, back to the rugby, I have it recorded, but I’m probably going to buy the dvd as it looks more than entertaining, and in a way, better because it recorded the failure to achieve the Grand Slam. I did catch a few seconds and watching the faces of the players as they watched the final few minutes of the France game… excellent telly. And speaking of excellence, did anyone else catch this morning’s Gift Grub[13] ? A day in the life of Paul O’Connell. Genius.

Expect Fox to cancel it after 3 episodes

    Published by Fence under TV

I’m not sure what to make of this:

    Via Damien Mulley

On one hand the first two Terminator films were great, the third was a bit pants, and too self-referential and mocking. On one hand it has Summer Glau in it, and who doesn’t love Summer?, but on the other, it has Fievel Mousekewitz in it, and can a mouse really take on The Machines?

And then there is the fact that the trailer doesn’t look all that great, that Fox are making it, and, that it is a spin off of a spin off of a spin off. Milking the cash cow dry anyone? And then there is the fact that it is a TV show, and there aren’t really all that many good shows left any more.

    • Example the first: Lost pants pants pants.
    • Heroes I do like. But I don’t love. It has some interesting storylines and characters but nothing that really grips me. I haven’t taken advantage of the fact that I can watch ahead on d’internet after all. Which says it all
    • Veronica Mars cancelled. And while I adored the first season, the second really didn’t grab me. And while I will watch season 3, and I do hope for the best, I’ll admit to feeling a little meh over it.
    • BSG I really do love. But it annoys me so. It could be so great, and I love most, if not all of the characters, but, as I’ve said before, the writers flinch away from the big issues. Which wouldn’t be a terrible thing if they didn’t set themselves up for them in the first place. If you are going to introduce “big” issues, then you are obliged[1] to deal with them properly. Brushing them under the carpet and solving them with one liners achieves nothing, well, apart from annoying me.[2] There is also the sense that they don’t really know where they are going. Part of this isn’t there fault, it is down to the possibility of cancellation and the fact that they don’t know how long they are going to last.
    • Rome. Okay, this is my exception. Great TV. But[3] there has only been one season. Where is season two BBC?
    • Life On Mars - I loved the first season. It was new and funny and interesting. But season 2? I dunno, it just wasn’t as good. Still better than a lot of stuff out there, but I was disappointed. And I disliked the finale. The Gene Genie was excellent, but there was very little character development or any forward movement at all.
    • House I dunno. I really liked it at first. But then it became a little cliched, and when it clashes with something else I tend to watch the something else.
    • Medium I like. I like a lot, but it isn’t great tv. It is highly watchable. And likeable. And while it does have some nice touches it is predictable and has never been must see tv.
    • The Sopranos I love when it is on. But when it isn’t I don’t think about it.

The solution to my telly woes? Give Joss a tv show, I loved Buffy, thought Angel was even better. And Firefly? Best of them all.

Or am I being too hard in my old age? Is there some great tv that I’m missing out on?

I’m all caught up on Heroes now, and have to wait until Jan 22nd for the next episode, but its no big deal because while I’m liking it, I’m not loving and needing more and more of it. It is, in many ways, quite predictable and I hate the previously voice-over man sections. They are just bad.

I took Manny to back to the shop yesterday, but while they are willing to replace him they don’t have any in stock at the moment, so I’ll be heading back next week. Luckily I live just round the corner so don’t have far to go.

I’ve just finished reading A year in the centre by Brian O’Driscoll which I enjoyed more than I thought I would. It is a diary of the year he was Lions captain, so plenty of bits of interest to any rugby fans.

Over at Crooked Timber they are marking the 400th anniversary of the Flight of the Earls. This was when the Irish aristocracy fled the country after an unsuccessful rebellion against the ebil invading Englanders. It’s an interesting whatif article, as it takes a quick look at how Irish history might have been different with an established native aristocracy in place. Reckon it was probably for the best in the long run, but then again, I am anti-aristocracy, so no real surprise there. Although I do kinda wonder how on earth there are still titles such as Earl of Longford[1] that are inherited by posh British folks. Surely after the War of Independence we should have gotten rid of all those peers? Not that I know anything about how they are organised or whatever. I merely object on moral grounds.

When I was reading A Year in the Centre BOD describes how Prince William turned up and he seemed like a nice fella, but I was thinking how if I met any royalty[2] then I would probably resent using their formal titles. I’d make exception for the head of state, because I’d expect any citizen of any other country to have respect for our Pres, but any of their family members? Like whatever!
