Where to start with this film… Well, I guess with where it starts, with a man. Brooding, unhappy. With a past. And a missing sister he must rescue. As for where it goes from there? Well, there’s a cult and religion and a goddess and rules and regulation but a “free” society. Traitors turned heroes, […]
also published as Beartown I was going to say that I recently read Backman’s breakout novel A man called Over, but then I checked the blog and discovered that it was back in 2015! well I suppose that’s very recent if you are talking about the age of the world. Ove was a book club […]
The Books of the Raksura ; 1 So after reading the wonderful murderbot books1 I wanted to read more by Wells. And this is the first book in the The Books of the Raksura which is nominated for Best Series in the 2018 Hugos I figured this was a good place to start. The main […]
Dominion of the fallen ; 1.5 Thuan and Kim Cuc and attempting go gain entrance to House Hawthorn. Every year the House accepts applicants, tests them, and maybe takes them in. I added this book to my unwieldy Mount TBR because of Smart Bitches description of it as a stunningly different fantasy that mixes Crimson Peak with Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. And then I saw that wonderful cover and had to read it. It’s just wonderful. Unfortunately I just never really clicked with this novel. […]
Set in Kabul under the rule of the Taliban The Breadwinner is the story of a family trapped by the law. The father has been sent to prison, leaving his wife, two daughters and infant son with no way of getting food or water, for no woman is allowed outside without a male relative. Not […]
Original title : Grave This film is just great. It is so unsettling and uncomfortable and eww-inducing. There were parts where I just couldn’t watch. It is just… damn. But it isn’t graphic in a guts being spilled over the place, or slicing and dicing people. It is graphic in the little moments, and that […]
Given the box office takings I’m guessing you’ve already seen this film. I mean, hasn’t everyone? But nevertheless there shall be no spoilers here, because you just never know do you… If you are a fan of the Marvel ‘verse then you’ll be going to see this I presume, and to be honest you need […]
Imagine a world where you couldn’t make a sound. No talking, no laughing. Not even walking with shoes on. A world where the response to noise is death. No imagine being a parent and trying to raise three children in that world. Sounds almost impossible. All the actors are just great in this, Blunt in […]
Read it online at Tor.
reread in April, 2018 and loved it just as much.
A long time ago in Japan, when cats were new there, an earthquake shook Small Cat’s home, and her city caught fire. In escaping the fire she ran too far from her home and her fudoki. “The fudoki was the collection of stories about all the cats who had lived in a place. It described what made it a home, and what made the cats a family.” In fleeing the fire the Small Cat gets lost in the city but decides to follow the story of her aunts, The Cat Who Came From the North. And so she heads North. But she goes too far and soon is so far from home that she thinks she will never find her way to her fudoki again.
I never actually added this book to Mount TBR when I saw Ana’s review on The Book Smugglers, but I did mentally make a note of it. And spotted it and ordered it for work. And it came in last week. And I saw it, so I borrowed it. And I loved it The dragon […]
