I found this to be a very disappointing film. I had enjoyed Shyamalan’s films and had hoped for something equally as good. It wasn’t even a twist that I was looking for seeing as a friend had figured out the twist to The Sixth Sense after seeing a trailer and guessing it. Once I started watching Sixth Sense what she had said well, it was pretty obvious.
Back to Signs; basically it is the story of the Hess family, a father (Gibson), his brother(Phoenix) and his kids. The father Graham used to be a Reverend but lost his faith, I suppose you could say, when his wife was knocked down and killed. There view of the crop circle phenomenon and the results.

Okay back to the review.
I felt this was a very cynical film, by that I mean that everything was done purely to get a reaction. To make the audience jump or to squirm and it was overdone. By the middle of the film I really didn’t care about the Hess family, well maybe Phoenix, but that’s just coz he is a cutie *g*
Not only did the music try to hard to make us jump, but so too did the whole film. The writing, the direction, everything was geared towards suspense and that OMG factor, and while I am prepared to go with that if I care, or believe in the characters here everything felt forced.
There is also the fact that these aliens try to invade a world that is 2 thirds water when it kills them. How stupid are they? I know that in War of the Worlds a similar idea is used, but at least the Martians there couldn’t have seen the germs that would prove there undoing. These aliens wee supposed to have been around for a while, making all those crop-circles, surely they cold have figured out that water was bad for them.
I know that the film wasn’t really about the aliens, it was about belief. It was about faith and is coincidence simply that or is there some guiding hand behind our actions? Frankly I didn’t care because I didn’t feel anything about the characters.
I am not saying that I never jumped, I did. But I knew I was going to before I did. I know that sounds stupid, but that how it felt to me. The music would build up, there would be a sense that “something” was out there, and what do you know something would appear suddenly.
