Rugby rugby rugby

16 October 2010

Yes, once more it is that time of the year. Rugby has returned with a vengeance. The Magners League has been on for a few weeks, and now it is the second week of the Heinekin Cup. Course what with not having Sky Sports I don’t get to watch the actual games. But I have just watched RTE’s highlights package. And first up was Munster v Toulon. After last week’s loss Munster really needed to win, and Donncha O’Callaghan in the press over the week appealing to the fans to get Properly behind the team.

And then, in the opening few minutes disaster stikes with Toulon scoring a try with pretty much their first attack. But Munster got straight back in the game and soon enough it was 7-all. And from then Munster just pushed on, in what seemed like a game played at a frantic pace. Final score Munster 45 – Toulon 18.

I have to say that it is very nice to see Peter Stringer making the starting team, and Jerry Flannery was back on as a sub too. Fingers crossed the rest of the season goes this well.

For their Heineken Cup game Leinster travelled to England to play Saracens, and without BOD as he is out injured at the moment.

And that was a game that was a tense affair. Although less so for me, as I foolishly was browsing through GoogleReader and of course they had the score up. Damn you spoilers! So I knew in advance that Leinster would win by two points and that Johnny Sexton would score all of them. So fair play Mr. Sexton. So they go top of the group and are off to Clermont next time out. Final score 25-23

And while I’m here, am I the only one who thinks that RTE’s screen format is a bit annoying. I cycled through the different aspects and each one of them was missing the RT from the RTE logo, even the one with the annoying black strips on either side on the screen.

Connacht aren’t in the Heineken Cup, instead they play in the Amlin Challenge Cup. And this week they were up against Bayonne at home in Galway. Final score there was 16-13 to Connacht. I can’t say anything about that game as RTE didn’t bother to show any of the game, or even mention it that I heard.

Ulster play tomorrow against Biarritz.
