Seldom in a woman, never in a man

18 June 2007

I’m waiting for episode 22 of Heroes to load up so I can watch it. Almost at an end now. Oooooh. But while I’m waiting I thought I may as well show you what I picked up today in my quick stop[1] in Chapters.

  • Item the first: A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. I’ve heard many great things about this series, but have never picked any of the books up. So when I spotted the first in the A Song of Ice and Fire series I figured sure what the hell. I may not get around to reading it for a while, but it can’t hurt[2] having it on the book shelves[3]
  • Item the second: Astonishing X-Men: Dangerous by The Joss God[4] and John Cassady.
  • Which obviously enough’d be followed by the 3rd, and final purchase: Astonishing X-Men: Torn also by Joss Whedon[5] and John Cassady. I’ve had the first in this series for ages, but only now have I gotten around to buying these two parts. I’m not going to read them just yet. I’m in the middle of a book, and then I have A Midsummer Night’s Dream to get to for the Once Upon A Time Reading Challenge. But after that. Then I’ll get stuck in.

  • I’m not sure if I’m one of those rare women that has patience.

    Linknotes:

    1. I was going to call into Peats to take a look at headphones, but spent too long book browsing
    2. unless it falls and bangs me on the head, but then again, it is only a paperback, so I am willing to take the risk
    3. Shelves, floors. There isn’t much of a difference
    4. All hail
    5. Did I mention I saw Serenity in the cinema over the weekend. It was well shiny

I was a tiny bit let down with the Heroes finale. It wasn't quite as epic as it could have been. What did you think? Still, I hold out high hopes for season 2

Hope you get round to reading A Game Of Thrones. I suppose that's like you telling me to get round to watching Firefly? :-)

Alan I haven't watched the final episode yet. That is for tonight. So expect some spoilers then :)

Weenie, everything in time. Does this mean you haven't watched Firefly yet. I'm so disappointed ;)

Song of Ice and Fire is a very good series… cruel and brutal. Influenced more by history than fantasy, since GRRM is obsessed with knights and jousting and the like.

    5. Fence says:

I've heard that James, and that it was in part inspired by the Wars of the Roses. It does sound like something I'd like, but there are a LOT of books in the series.

There aren't that many books in the series, ie it's not like the Wheel of Time series?

A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords (one volume but can also be found as two volumes for some reason) and A Feast For Crows?

Very much character driven with rich historical tones. Characters that you start off disliking in one book end up as one of your favourites in a later book (or maybe that's just me!). Characters that you may like can also end up dead…ahhh, I won't spoil it for you! ;-)

That's four. And there is a fifth, and then another two after that according to Wikipedia. But it isn't that that has put me off til now, rather it is the fact that the series isn't finished. And there is nothing worse than getting hooked into a great series and then having to wait and wait for years for the next instalment.

I know what you mean – hence this year, I've reread the first two books (for the 3rd time) and will shortly reread SoS too, whilst waiting for the next book… No wonder I don't get to read new books, am too busy reading ones I've read already! ;-)

I am bereft – we finished up watching Heroes last month. (Got them off I-Tunes.) It's such a good show. Peter likes George R.R. and swears I would like them too, but having just done an inventory of my To-Be-Read pile, I have 20+ books waiting already.

    10. Fence says:

I think I'll wait a while weenie. I hate waiting. But eventually I will get to it eventually.

Just watched the final ep Ann. Not too sure about that finale, but overall the series is pretty entertaining stuff.

      Love the Astonishing X-Men line!
