Journey to the Center of the world

If you are looking for a mindless fun flick then this is one for you. I can’t imagine anyone going in to see Journey to the Center of the Earth expecting a thoughtful piece of film making. Especially considering that the main selling point of this film is the fact that it is in 3D. But it is fun. Action sequences and the wonder that is 3d. Honestly, it is great. I loved it for that U2 concert, but in actual film it works too.

Hitman

Posted by: Fence   in Moving Pictures

Dir: Xavier Gens
Writ: Skip Woods, based on game

  • Timothy Olyphant … Agent 47
  • Dougray Scott … Mike Whittier
  • Olga Kurylenko … Nika Boronina
  • Robert Knepper … Yuri Marklov
  • Ulrich Thomsen … Mikhail Belicoff
  • Henry Ian Cusick … Udre Belicoff

To be honest I never thought I’d be bothered to see this film. The trailers made it look ridiculous, and not in a good way, but we were going, and it was at the right time, so we figured what the hell. And I’m glad we did go, because while is makes no sense and is incredibly silly it was also fairly entertaining and funny.

The Golden Compass

Posted by: Fence   in Moving Pictures

Dir & Writ: Chris Weitz
Based on book by Philip Pullman

  • Dakota Blue Richards … Lyra Belacqua
  • Nicole Kidman … Marisa Coulter
  • Daniel Craig … Lord Asriel
  • Freddie Highmore … Pantalaimon (voice)
  • Ian McKellen … Iorek Byrnison (voice)
  • Eva Green … Serafina Pekkala
  • Sam Elliott … Lee Scoresby

I read, and really enjoyed, Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials a while back, so I was really looking forward to this film, the first of three. Unfortunately it just isn’t very good. It should be. The story is a wonderful one, Kidman and Craig are fantastic, although Craig isn’t really on screen for all that long, and Dakota Blue Richards is wonderful as Lyra. Some of the other kids aren’t too great, but we’ll let them away. The special effects are, for the most part, superb. The polar bears in particular are fantastic.

War

Posted by: Fence   in Moving Pictures

Dir: Philip G. Atwell
Writ: Lee Anthony Smith & Gregory J. Bradley

  • Jet Li … Rogue
  • Jason Statham … Jack Crawford
  • Devon Aoki … Kira
  • Luis Guzmán … Benny

Supposedly this is a martial-arts action film about an FBI agent hunting down an assassin because he killed the cop’s partner. But in reality there isn’t enough plot for that. Which is very surprising because there is a LOT of story and very little martial arts. There is a fair amount of action, but it is all things we’ve seen before.

The Bourne Ultimatum

Posted by: Fence   in Moving Pictures

Dir: Paul Greengrass
Writ: Tony Gilroy ; Scott Z. Burns ; George Nolfi & Tony Gilroy
Based on the book by Robert Ludlum
Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

  • Matt Damon … Jason Bourne
  • Julia Stiles … Nicky Parsons
  • David Strathairn … CIA Deputy Director Noah Vosen
  • Scott Glenn … CIA Director Ezra Kramer
  • Paddy Considine … Simon Ross
  • Albert Finney … Dr. Albert Hirsch
  • Joan Allen … Pamela Landy

Bourne is back. Or maybe it’d be more accurate to say taht he never really went away, as this film picks up even before the second in the series, The Bourne Supremacy, has finished. So it is worth your while making sure you’ve seen that before you take a look at this one. That being said it isn’t vital, you’ll pick up on a main plot soon enough, and while what you miss out on does add to the film it isn’t totally necessary as there is plenty of back story floating around in this film.

Starring:

  • Jason Statham … Frank Martin
  • Alessandro Gassman … Gianni
  • Amber Valletta … Audrey Billings
  • Kate Nauta … Lola
  • François Berléand … Tarconi

First Bourne, now Frank, I must seriously be in the mood for action flicks, don’t you think? Of course The Transporter is a lot sillier than the Bourne films. But just as fun.

The first starts off with Frank, the Transporter of the title, driving the getaway car for a bank robbery. A scenario used to show us all just how cool, calm, and collected he is. Oh yeah, and what a great driver he is. And also to introduce us to “the rules” by which he transports.

  • Matt Damon … Jason Bourne
  • Franka Potente … Marie Helena Kreutz

And The Bourne Supremacy
Dir: Paul Greengrass
Writ: Tony Gilroy
Staring:

  • Matt Damon … Jason Bourne
  • Franka Potente … Marie
  • Brian Cox … Ward Abbott
  • Julia Stiles … Nicky
  • Karl Urban … Kirill
  • Gabriel Mann … Danny Zorn
  • Joan Allen … Pamela Landy

Both based on the novels by Robert Ludlum. No spoilers.

I remember really enjoying The Bourne Identity when I watched it first. But for some reason I never saw the sequel, but with the third out now in the cinemas I thought this is an ideal opportunity to catch up. And when I spotted the dvd set of the pair was only 18 euro I nabbed it.

I haven’t watched any of the extras yet, so can’t comment on those, but I really enjoyed the films. The are the perfect blend of reality and fantasy violence.
