After the bore-fest that was Grim vs Grimmer I didn’t hold out much hope for Wonder Woman. I had thought Gadot was one of the best things about that Supes v Bats film, but DC really haven’t had a great run of superheroes films recently. I didn’t even bother with Suicide Squad.

I also don’t really have a history with Wonder Woman herself. I mean, I like the idea of her, but I haven’t read her comics and although I do recall watching the odd Linda Carter tv show here and there I don’t remember being all that invested in it. I think it was reruns of reruns of reruns that I watched so I think it was already way too old fashioned for my young teenage sophistication ;)

When I think of Amazons and women warriors what I think of Xena, even though I wasn’t a superfan of the show at the time. But I think that was more down to when it was shown on the telly. It clashed with life, or something. Young people, do you know how blessed you are to live in an era when scheduling is almost irrelevant and if you miss an episode when it airs you can still watch it, easily, in a myriad of different ways? Do you? Well, back in the long ago days, if you missed an episode you missed the episode, until the rerun appeared. And yes, eventually we used videos to record stuff, but they missed up, especially when the station suddenly ran ten or 20 minutes late on account of sport, or some such.

So, long story short, I don’t have any real history with the character herself. The only expectations I had of the film were low.

So it was surprise to me that I loved the start as much as I did. The young Diana was just awesome. To see a young girl be so active, to have women to look up, to have no sense of gender roles or expectations. That was just awesome.

I loved all the parts on Themyscira, even if I was sort of wondering had it been some sort of stasis since Ancient Greek times? or were they all really old? or did time work differently? But those thoughts didn’t detract from how much I enjoyed it. That fight scene between the Amazons and the German soldiers was great.

Once Diana left the island it turned into a much more generic superhero film. Don’t get me wrong, it was still enjoyable, but it wasn’t a patch on what had gone before. And it suffered from the Smurfette syndrome, in that we get a bunch of different guys and one woman. I suppose you could argue that the soldiers during WWI were all men, and that is where they were, but even there there would have been women, at the very least nurses and prostitutes.

It did also have great cultural representation in the background characters. Peoples from all over the British Empire served in the war, so it was nice to see them floating about in the background, as well as some of the supporting characters.

But I would have loved a film where Diana and a bunch of amazons came riding into battle, a group of women who had never known the patriarchy, think about that, what a film that would have made.

So overall I really did enjoy Wonder Woman, and I’ll tune back for Justice League whenever it comes along because of it.

I am hearing good things about this. I am not sure if I will make it to the theatre to see it, though.
