The Lost City of Z [based on the book]

[imdb_movie_detail title=”The Lost City of Z” detail=”plot”] Sometimes when you describe a film or a book as “interesting” you really mean that you didn’t like it but don’t really want to say that. In this case that is not what I mean at all when I say that The Lost City of Z is a […]

Hidden figures [based on the book by]

[imdb_movie_detail title=”Hidden Figures” detail=”plot”] Oh, I really enjoyed this film. So much more than I thought I would. I mean a story based on maths doesn’t sound all that entertaining. But I suppose that isn’t really what this is about, it is about the women who fought to show NASA just how vital they were […]

Foxcatcher

Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) won gold at the 1984 Olympics. As did his older brother David (Mark Ruffalo). Now they are in training for the Worlds, and then they’ll be focusing on the 1988 Olympics. David has a family, he has a possible job as a wrestling coach lined up. None of that seems to […]

Jersey Boys

Jersey Boys is based on a musical, based on the life of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. Their formation, rise to fame, and then their disintegration. Going in to the film I knew nothing about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, but as I heard the songs I did recognise most of them. All […]

Micky Ward is the youngest of a large family. All his life he has looked up to his older brother, Dicky, who once knocked down Sugar Ray Leonard in a fight. He does, however, have the habit of not showing up when he should, and hanging out in crack houses when he should be elsewhere. And now Micky has a chance to make it in the big time, will his family continue to stand in his way?

Milk

Despite my long stated policy of not reading reviews until after I’ve seen a film I’ve come across quite a few views on this film. Mostly positive. Course I didn’t really read any of them. I’m not about to go against my own policy that way. But I did notice the good buzz. So maybe that is why I came out of the cinema a little disappointed at this one.

W.

This is an odd sort of a film. I mean, it clearly isn’t meant to be full of praise for George W. Bush. But at the same time it is almost gentle in its treatment of him. Presenting him as a somewhat simple-minded, but well-intentioned, fool. With Daddy Issues. The film cuts back and forward […]

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford [based on the book]

I loved this film.

I loved everything about it. The acting was brilliant. The way the story unfolded. The narration. The casting. The scenery. The cinematography. The soundtrack. Everything was just great. Best film I’ve seen this year. Which’d be a higher compliment if this wasn’t the first film I’ve been to see so far this year. But I’m guessing it’ll be up on the top ten list by the end of 2008.
