I capture the castle by

I capture the castle

Cassandra Mortmain’s father is a famous writer; unfortunatley he has been suffering from writer’s block for years. Her mother is dead, but she has a lovely stepmother now in Topaz. She also has a younger brother Thomas, and and older sister, Rose. And then there is Stephen, who has grown up with them, not forgetting the dog Heloise and the cat Abelard. They live in a ruin of a castle in England, and have no income. Which means no money for clothes, repairs, rent, or food. They have sold everything worth selling. And then the two Cotton brothers arrive on the scene.

Week 1 in the Ripley house

Ripley

And things are going well for house-mate Ripley.

Yeah, that’s enough of that, but I do hope you were reading it in a suitable accent, that being the Geordie one. Anyway, Ripley has been with us now for 4 full days and she is settling in well. On Friday we went to the vets and she got her first round of vaccinations so she spent the afternoon and evening recovering and was then up bright and early that night to let us know the effects had worn off.

It is 2039 and Georgia & Shaun Mason are up and coming bloggers. Solid betas they are on the look out for the story that will enable them to break away and start their own site, their own identity. And they are about to get their big break, because presidential hopeful Senator Ryman is about to start campaigning for the Republican nomination. And the Masons are going to be part of his media circus.

Oh, and did I mention the zombies?

X-Men: First Class dir. by

X-Man First ClassCharles Xavier and Eric Lensherr weren’t always the famous Professor X and Magento. This is their origin story, the origin story of the original X-Men. Set in the 1960s with the Cuban Missile crises at boiling point, the pot of tensions is being stirred further by Sebastian Shaw, a mutant who has been doing the rounds since the 1940s. He believes that mutants are the superior race, and that they must destroy the inferior human race in order to take their rightful place as masters of the earth. Lebensraum and all that.

The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it

I am considering a dog.

I have been talking with himself about it, and it seems like a good time. We’re in a house, with a small garden, a quiet estate, and a big field nearby. Plus as he isn’t working at the moment he has the time to spend with our potential pup during the day.

Cinderella ate my daughter by

cinderella ate my daughterAfter a career writing about feminism and girls in culture Peggy Orenstein found herself the mother of a girl. And so brought face to face with the practicalities of what she had been theorising about, how to raise a girl to believe in herself and how to try
and avoid the madonna/whore dichotomy. And then her daughter entered her “Disney princess” phase.

Hanna dir. by

Hanna is sixteen years old. She lives with her father in the woods in isolated Finland. To say she hasn’t had the most normal of upbringings is not an exaggeration. Her father has trained her to survive, to adapt, fight, and to kill. Now that she is growing up she wants more. She wants to experience the rest of the world. But to do so she must first help kill her father’s old enemy.

Blood by

The unnamed central character of this short story finds himself suddenly craving blood. He can’t understand it, he is a normal person, a normal man, why on earth is this happening to him. He tries to rationalise it, maybe he has an iron deficiency? Or maybe it is a totally misdirected sex-drive? And yet, he continues to find himself being drawn towards blood. Bloody raw steaks, the next-door neighbour’s chickens…

The heroes by

the heroesThe forces of the Union are about to meet those of the North in battle. Over the next three days war will be waged, and men will die. Or become heroes. Or something in between. This is the story of those bloody days, the story of the men, and occasional women, on both sides who fight.
