This film is so very wrong in so many ways. It has, as heroes, two adult men who live at home with their single parents, taking no responsibility for their lives, scrounging, and behaving like immature obnoxious 12 year olds. And that is a flattering description.
But it is also hilarious.
Honestly, I think I almost died laughing so much at parts of this film. Ferrell and Reilly could be 12 year olds, the way they act in this film. Unreasonable, annoying, smack ‘em up side the head 12 year old boys. Because they really are obnoxious. I can’t say that often enough. Obnoxious and horrid[1]
And don’t get me started on the role women play in this film. Only there to fulfil a part in a male fantasy.
Still, I laughed. I laughed hard! and it was good. I’d even watch it again. If only for the funniest attempted murder scene ever made. Funniest burial scene anyways.
One day my father just said, “Goddamn it, you’re seventeen, stop being a fucking dinosaur and get a job!”
Linknotes:
- - I do love the word horrid, dont you. Although you do need to say it in a snooty manner, with a slightly upper class English accent to get its full effect ↩

- Will Ferrell - Ricky Bobby
- John C. Reilly - Cal Naughton, Jr.
- Gary Cole - Reese Bobby
- Sacha Baron Cohen - Jean Girrard
Ricky Bobby, born in a speeding car, wants nothing more out of life than to go fast. That, and win. Because if you aren’t first, you’re last. As his daddy told him the one time he turned up in his life. And as a winning NASCAR driver he seems to have a pretty good life. He wins, has plenty of money, two obnoxious kids with the genius names of Walker, and Texas Ranger, a beautiful wife, and the ability to go fast all he wants.
But then things begin to go wrong, as Jean Girrad, an F1 driver turns up on the circut. Ricky crashes his car, and all of a sudden begins to feel the fear. He loses his drive, his wife, his desire to go fast. And its all fun and games when his father shows up trying to help him out, in his own drunken bum with a heart of stone way.
Overall it is an entertaining enough film, with a fair few laughs, but it isn’t the genius that was Anchorman and a few of the laughs fall flat. Still, worth watching if you’ve nothing better to do.

The Legend of Ron Burgandy
- Will Ferrell - Ron Burgundy
- Christina Applegate - Veronica Corningstone
- Paul Rudd - Brian Fantana
- Steve Carell - Brick Tamland
- David Koechner - Champ Kind
- Fred Willard - Ed Harken
Who knew the history of news readers had so much bloodshed and conflict?
If you like this type of film (Wedding Crashers, Dodgeball) then you’ll love this film. Ferrell is wonderful as over the top anchorman Ron. But it is the wonderful mix of quotable phrases, stupidity and humour that make this film one to watch.
I’m not going to recap the plot, because there isn’t any point. This story doesn’t really have to make sense. It is all about the madness.

If you go see this film looking for nothing more than simple entertainment then you should come out entirely satisfied. It made me laugh, although the songs, with the exception of Springtime for Hitler, didn’t really do anything for me, little boring and watching it you’d wish they had left a few out.
The plot, for those that don’t know, concerns Max Bialystock, a theatre producer who can be counted on to give audiences the worst plays possible. But when an accountant (Leo Bloom) suggests that through creative accounting, a dishonest producer could make more with a flop than a hit, Bialystock sees an oppertunity.
