The Break-Up

Posted by: Fence   in Moving Pictures

Dir: Peyton Reed
Writ: Jeremy Garelick, Jay Lavender, & Vince Vaughn

  • Vince Vaughn - Gary
  • Jennifer Anniston - Brooke
  • Cole Hauser - Lupus Grobowski
  • Joey Lauren Adams - Addie
  • Jon Favreau - Johnny O

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us You all know I’m a fan of Vince Vaughn’s, so I was quite looking forward to this. Plus the trailers looked entertaining, though we do know that you can never trust a trailer, so I was a little hopeful. I hadn’t heard great things, but, then again, I don’t go out of my way to read reviews before I’ve seen a film.

I’d have to say that this is a good solid film, but nothing spectacular. It makes you laugh, it makes you identify with the characters, it is entertaining. But nothing special. So I suppose, yet again, a meh-film.

Don’t go expecting a rom-com, because while there is romance, and there is comedy, it doesn’t conform to the genre. Lucky me, I pay no heed to genre, but if that is what you are looking for then the Break-Up is not for you.

If however you are looking for an entertaining few hours, with a few laughs thrown in, then by all means, go see this. I won’t be raving about it though. That being said, there are a few nice scenes. Mainly Vaughn’s comedic ones, but also a few of the more “dramatic” ones. But overall, it isn’t enough to make you want to watch it again.

Thumbsucker

Posted by: Fence   in Moving Pictures

  • Lou Taylor Pucci …. Justin Cobb
  • Tilda Swinton …. Audrey Cobb
  • Vincent D’Onofrio …. Mike Cobb
  • Vince Vaughn …. Mr. Geary
  • Keanu Reeves …. Perry Lyman

I’m not sure exactly how to review this film. I enjoyed it while watching, it is humourous and fun, but it is also a bit odd, and by giving away details I may ruin your enjoyment.

The film revolves around the Cobb family[1] Justin in particular. He is the thumbsucker of the title, and because he a teenage there are quite a few people who would like him to take his thumb out of his mouth for good.

I suppose it is a coming of age film, although we don’t really get any solutions, that is the point. There are no real answers to life, we just live. Doesn’t mean we have to stop asking, just that we are never going to come up with one definitive answer.

Tics and assorted stuff

   Posted by: Fence   in Ramblings

So I met up with Cavada-girl last night. We headed to see Wedding Crashers which I enjoyed a hell of a lot more than I thought I would. I’ve always liked Vince Vaughn, but now I adore him :)

We also got a chance to chat a little, she’s busy organising her life for a year in Canada, so making with the saving of money.

Today we had some fantabulus weather, so I wandered about town for a while. Picked up the new HP book, but haven’t started reading it yet for two reasons. First off, I’m in the middle of a Mary Gentle book and second of all I had a very annoying headache. Annoying for two reasons. One - the headache part. And two, for some reason it kept making a muscle on the bridge of my nose flicker (see there was a purpose behind the tic in the title. Made you wonder did it?)

Anyways, headache and tic all gone now (yeah for pain murdering tablets), so I can waste my time surfing on webland without wondering will it make the drill in the head worse.

Wedding Crashers

Posted by: Fence   in Moving Pictures

Dir: David Dobkin
Writ: Steve Faber & Bob Fisher

  • Owen Wilson …. John Beckwith
  • Vince Vaughn …. Jeremy Klein
  • Rachel McAdams …. Claire Cleary
  • Isla Fisher …. Gloria Cleary (yes, Shannon from Home & Away)
  • Christopher Walken …. Treas.Sec. Wm.Cleary

I was expected some mindless entertainment, with a few laughs. Instead I got mindless entertainment, plenty of insanity and loads of laughs.

The basic plot is fairly simple: two guys use the wedding season to attend (uninvited) various weddings and sleep with as many women as possible. Wilson(John) and Vaughn(Jeremy) play the two wedding crashers and long time friends. But at their last wedding of this particular season Jeremy is forced into something resembling a relationship when John falls for Claire Cleary.

John and Claire are the main attempt at a couple, but I thought that Jeremy and Gloria were much more entertaining. Gloria is a total nutjob, and Jeremy isn’t quite all there either.

There really isn’t all that much to say about this film. It doesn’t want to make you think, just to laugh and it really works in that department. I’d highly recommend this for an evening’s entertainment. I may even buy it once it comes out on dvd. The story isn’t original, the plot often doesn’t make sense, but who cares. All the cast play off each other wonderfully, although I thought that Vaughn stole the show.

Can I just add that I adore Vince Vaughn

Mr & Mrs Smith

Posted by: Fence   in Moving Pictures

Dir: Doug Liman
Writ: Simon Kinberg

  • Brad Pitt - John Smith
  • Angelina Jolie …. Jane Smith
  • Vince Vaughn … Eddie
  • Adam Brody …. Benjamin Diaz

I really didn’t think that this film would be all that great. The trailers made it look silly, stupid, and highly annoying. But then I saw a couple of positive seeming reviews, and there was nothing else on so decided to head along. Turns out that, yes, it is a silly, stupid film, but an entertaining one. Very far from annoying.

You probably know the basic plot? Husband and wife, both spy-killer types, but neither know the other’s secret identity until they go up against one another. Violence then ensues.

This could very easily have been rubbish, the trailers show that. But the comedy is very well done. Full of one-liners and great comic moments, the film makes good use of the actors, Pitt is surprisingly funny. After this and Snatch maybe he should stick to comedy roles?

Fast-moving and action packed, it isn’t one to think about. Just enjoy the mindless, almost comic violence, the verbal attacks and the pretty people.
