Expect Fox to cancel it after 3 episodes

Published by Fence under TV

I’m not sure what to make of this:

Via Damien Mulley

On one hand the first two Terminator films were great, the third was a bit pants, and too self-referential and mocking. On one hand it has Summer Glau in it, and who doesn’t love Summer?, but on the other, it has Fievel Mousekewitz in it, and can a mouse really take on The Machines?

And then there is the fact that the trailer doesn’t look all that great, that Fox are making it, and, that it is a spin off of a spin off of a spin off. Milking the cash cow dry anyone? And then there is the fact that it is a TV show, and there aren’t really all that many good shows left any more.

  • Example the first: Lost pants pants pants.
  • Heroes I do like. But I don’t love. It has some interesting storylines and characters but nothing that really grips me. I haven’t taken advantage of the fact that I can watch ahead on d’internet after all. Which says it all
  • Veronica Mars cancelled. And while I adored the first season, the second really didn’t grab me. And while I will watch season 3, and I do hope for the best, I’ll admit to feeling a little meh over it.
  • BSG I really do love. But it annoys me so. It could be so great, and I love most, if not all of the characters, but, as I’ve said before, the writers flinch away from the big issues. Which wouldn’t be a terrible thing if they didn’t set themselves up for them in the first place. If you are going to introduce “big” issues, then you are obliged[1] to deal with them properly. Brushing them under the carpet and solving them with one liners achieves nothing, well, apart from annoying me.[2] There is also the sense that they don’t really know where they are going. Part of this isn’t there fault, it is down to the possibility of cancellation and the fact that they don’t know how long they are going to last.
  • Rome. Okay, this is my exception. Great TV. But[3] there has only been one season. Where is season two BBC?
  • Life On Mars - I loved the first season. It was new and funny and interesting. But season 2? I dunno, it just wasn’t as good. Still better than a lot of stuff out there, but I was disappointed. And I disliked the finale. The Gene Genie was excellent, but there was very little character development or any forward movement at all.
  • House I dunno. I really liked it at first. But then it became a little cliched, and when it clashes with something else I tend to watch the something else.
  • Medium I like. I like a lot, but it isn’t great tv. It is highly watchable. And likeable. And while it does have some nice touches it is predictable and has never been must see tv.
  • The Sopranos I love when it is on. But when it isn’t I don’t think about it.

The solution to my telly woes? Give Joss a tv show, I loved Buffy, thought Angel was even better. And Firefly? Best of them all.

Or am I being too hard in my old age? Is there some great tv that I’m missing out on?

Happy New Year

Published by Fence under Ramblings, TV, Weekly memes

Hola muchachos y muchachas, and welcome to 2007.

How did everyone get over the holiday season? I hope you went along with Budweiser’s wishes and had a good one.

Mine was the usual. Although I did manage to discover “living things” inhabiting the mutt, which meant he had to take a shower, which he doesn’t really like. You’d think he’d be delighra over having a warm shower instead of a freezing cold hosing, but he never shows any gratitude. I also got to meet the new cat, she[1] is a tabby, silver white with black stripes. And for a stray she is ultra tame. Even gets on well with the mutt; he isn’t so fond of her chasing his tail. He also has a case of that green eyed monster, and anytime anyone shows herself a bit of attention he has to come over to investigate. Then again, he was always sorta like that, just a little more so now.

As for the new year resolutions, well many years ago I made one to never make any more, and I’m sticking to that one.

Anyone catch Celebrity Big Brother?
I know, I moan about the stupidness of the regular one, and that last celeb version was unwatchable, but you just gotta tune in to see who they manage to get on.

And this year we have a whathisface Jackson, Michael’s brother, who looked very very uncomfortable and out of place. Leo Sayers, who seemed to know everyone from some party or other. Teddy Sherringham’s girlfriend who got booed coming in, but she seems like just a nice young wan.

Biggest idiot of the night award goes to the no-name from whatever that band is called. The fella who tried to impress everyone with his cursing and giving the crowd the finger. Loved their reply, chants of “Who Are Ya?” Honestly, giving people the finger, if you are over 15 or 16 then it just makes you look like an arsehole.

My favourite celeb, obviously was Face from A-Team.

Don’t know if I’ll watch anymore, but sure that was an entertaining evening watching all the celebs and non-celebs arrive.

I’ve also started watching that Medium thingy, I’m not to sure if I like the stories and plots, but sure yer man from American Gothic is reason to watch. Not that he is fanciable[2] or anything, but I like him as an actor. It’s also nice to see a married couple on telly without them being in a soap.

Speaking of telly, which i was, I also watched the first episode of Heroes, despite the fact that it doesn’t start until February, and not through any illegal file-sharing activity, but through the wonders of free internet telly, okay, so the quality of the picture aint that great. But you know what? Yup, that’s right, it is FREE! It also seems to have Veronica Mars season three, so I may actually watch it without waiting for the dvd.

As you are probably aware, I’ve missed a few Unconscios Muttering Sunday/Mondays, what with the Christmas and the not being online, but look, it is week 204 and Luna Nina says:

  1. Resolution ::
  2. Happy ::
  3. Bubbly ::

Veronica Mars - Season 2

Published by Fence under Moving Pictures, TV

Created by: Rob Thomas
Dir: John T. Kretchmer, Nick Marck, Jason Bloom, Henry Winer, Kevin Bray, Steve Gomer, Rob Thomas, Guy Norman Bee, Sarah Pia Anderson, Rick Rosenthal, Michael Fields, Martha Mitchell
Writ: Rob Thomas,Diane Ruggiero, Phil Klemmer, John Enbom, Dayna North, Cathy Belben, Russell Smith, John Serge

  • Kristen Bell - Veronica Mars
  • Percy Daggs III - Wallace Fennel
  • Jason Dohring - Logan Echolls
  • Francis Capra - Eli “Weevil” Navarro
  • Enrico Colantoni - Keith Mars

Season 1 of Veronica Mars was a pretty good example of the perfect season. Once that first episode started it gripped you and you wanted to watch straight through. And when it ended there was uncertainty over it being picked up again, so there were aspects of that final episode that were left open, you could choose who was at the door if it never made it back.

spoilers below

But it did get a second season, and so it was revealed that it was Show Spoilers ▼

at the door.

But the first half of this season never really got going properly. Yes there was the mystery of the bus crash, but it wasn’t as important to me as Lilli’s death in the first season. But mid point in the season it really took off again. I’m not sure exactly when. Some people might suggest the episode Donut Run, when Show Spoilers ▼

but I’m not too sure. That was a turning point in that Show Spoilers ▼

was out of the picture, and now the door was wide open for Show Spoilers ▼

but that episode, and whole storyline seemed a bit sloppy to me. Surely Show Spoilers ▼

Maybe it was the episode Aint No Magic Mountain High Enough when we get to see Logan go all sweet and luvvy dovey Show Spoilers ▼

Plots within plots.

And then there is the Lilly Kane murder trial. Show Spoilers ▼

but it was a great storyline to bring back.

I could bring up other issues, like the Show Spoilers ▼

or the return of Show Spoilers ▼

, altogether this started slow, but the reason raised its game more than enough to make up for that. And rewatching will probably help.

Final episode: Show Spoilers ▼

Life’s tragedy is that we get old too soon and wise too late

Published by Fence under TV

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.usSo I watched the final episode of Veronica Mars this morning. And, lo it was good. I have one little problem, but, not enough to make this anything less than a great episode. And a fantastic final episode. It ties up some parts, leaves others loose. It’s just great.

But now I gotta wait for more episodes, and despite rumours I don’t think there has been anything official about season three. It looks good, but not positive.

I also watched Thursday’s episode of The Sopranos. So very different to VM, but also great tv. Tony is a great, sympathetic, charismatic, repellent character. And I loved the way the mob society works, how Tony has to reassert his “alpha male” status by picking a fight on spurious grounds and winning. You could almost be watching a nature documentary rather than people.

Could you PLEASE send somebody up as quickly as possible? He opened the computer with a screwdriver and is looking for his missing fonts

Published by Fence under Ramblings

  • I’ve been covering, cataloguing and stamping books all afternoon. My hands feel icky, despite having been just washed. Not dirty, but sorta gritty or something.
  • IT guy came down to blow up some computers.
That’s only half a joke. He actually came down to take a look at the two that just won’t switch on. So he goes down, does something[1] and there is this huge bang[2] like a bomb just went off or something. All the students go “woah, dude”[3] and he wanders back up to me. “Yup, they’re on fire. I’ll get them replaced tomorrow.”[4]
  • Veronica Mars season 2 dvd has, and I quote “amazing extras”. Now, I know that’s got you interested. What could they be? Special money releasing devices, cause that’d be amazing. Or the cast in miniature so they could do extra scenes just for you? Which’d be equally amazing.
Sadly, no. The extras are Behind the scenes featurette, gag reel and deleted scenes. All good, but hardly amazing. From that srticle it also seems likely that it has gotten picked up for a third season. But not definite yet.
  • the end

Linknotes:
  1. who knows what, it is that arcane IT dept
  2. look, I’ve said it before, exaggeration is a GOOD thing
  3. again with the lying but I can’t help it
  4. what do you mean you want truth? Okay so, some power-thingy is fried most likely due to a power surge. he’ll fix it tomorrow, maybe

She thinks I’m the renaissance. I had to go along with all this reclusive genius crap. She going to be very upset when she finds out I’m just a reclusive wanker.

There are many little things running around my head. Like Black Books.[1] My dislike of labeling.[2] The sunny weather. The fact that I was stoopid enough to record the brand new Sharpe programme on ITV over the weekend, but then forgot about the second part. How Veronica Mars is all exciting. How Bones although light and fluffy[3] it is still quite dark.[4] How House is really good. Hmmm, most of these thoughts seem to revolve about TV. But there are others here. I swear. Books! and annoying students. And rugby. And taking time off. And, and and….

They are running too fast, I’ll have wait a while til they settle down a bit. At the moment, if you could see them, the thoughts would resemble rabid squirrels chasing each other round and round in circles. So fast they actually can’t be seen. So for all you know they aren’t really there :what: Yes, that makes sense. Of course it does.

Oh, which reminds me, must investimigate[5] getting my paws on some more Fred Vargas books.

Oh, and that show on Bosco set in the garden, with the dog called Flaherty[6] Remember him[7] “woof” said Flaherty. And there was a cat and a magic crow? Cornelius?

Today’s insanities were brought to you by the letter hyphen and the imaginary number

  3. yes yes, for a cop show that shows death and decay
  4. can you have light and frothy dark shows?
  5. If Homer Simpson can stick extra ms in words I can too
  6. or maybe Faherty, theres a discussion on some blog… somewhere
  7. adressing Irish-types now, cause obviously furriners wouldn’t, seeing as Bosco is as Irish as …. I dunno a potato eating leprechaun. Although in reality that’d mean he wasn’t real and so not really Irish

Veronica Mars 1.02 - Credit Where Credit’s Due

Published by Fence under Moving Pictures, TV

We open with Wallace and Veronica discovering how boring their lives are, as they have no plans for the weekend. Wallace shows Veronica a flier about a party, which he vaguely wants to crash. But it is in code, the 09-ers don’t ant undesirables at their beach party.

At aforementioned party we see Duncan and a stranger chatting in a car before meeting the locals. Stranger turns out to be called Troy. And look, there is Paris Hilton. Would is be very strange of me to admit that I didn’t know who she was. I mean I recognise the name, but I’ve never seen her in anything before. Anyways, the party gets interrupted by our very old bald greaser who thinks that the 09-ers really shouldn’t be on his beach. We get a nice little slanging match between Logan and Weevil, but before things progress any further the sheriff turns up and cares everyone away. He then tells his deputy to pick up the kegs, all the boys can come to his this time. He really isn’t a good cop it he? But he is fun.
