This crunchie feeling is just plain wrong!

   Posted by: Fence   in Ramblings

Howdy folks, anything new and exciting going on with you lot. I’m all out of whack with the days of the week. I keep thinking that today is Friday; it isn’t. Today is Thursday[1] But I’ve got that Friday feeling[2] Albeit[3] one that is dampened cause I know it is premature.

I think I shall have a delightful[4] weekend of doing nothing at all[5] And it is a long weekend. I can’t wait. Cause you know the way you have nothing to do for ages and ages and then suddenly everything happens at once. For the past two weeks I’ve had places to go and people to see almost every single day. It’s fun, don’t get me wrong, but tiring. A long lie in and a relaxing weekend of telly sounds like a most excellent plan.

*yawn*

I’ve also been bold[6] and gone and bought books. There is an order from Amazon on its way, or at least it will be on its way, but not til August[7] cause I’ve pre-ordered Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyer[8] And yesterday I wandered around Easons and came across The Dragon Waiting by John M. Ford. Okay, it was really its new cover that got my attention. It has been republished in Orion’s Fantasy Masterworks series and it looks purty. So I picked it up and read the first few pages. Alternate history with a bit of fantasy thrown in. Sounds like my kind of book. And I made with more wandering about and I spotted Empire of Ivory by Namoi Novik. The 4th in the Temeraire series, which I’d meant to pick up ages ago, but then forgot, or never knew, that it had been published in paperback. Its a different cover style than my other books in that series though…

Thirteen Books I own, but that are still waiting for me to read.

  1. Image of Memory and DreamsMemory and Dreams by Charles De Lint.
I’m thinking I’ll add this to my Once Upon a Time reading list.
  2. Image of A Wrinkle in TimeA Wrinkle in Time as I’ve heard nothing but good things about it. i think this may be more sci-fi than fantasy, but I’m sticking it on the additional Once Upon a Time reading list as well. I may not get to it in time. Then again, I may.
  3. Image of The Blue GirlAnother Charles De Lint; The Blue Girl
One already on my Once Upon a Time reading list.
  4. Image of Fitzpatrick's WarFitzpatrick’s War
Don’t really know much about this book. Sci-fi, futuristic earth type thing I reckon.
  5. Image of Vampire Diaries #1The first book in the Vampire Diaries series.
Andi mentioned these ages and ages ago. And I think Heather did to? Haven’t managed to read it yet. But I’ll get there eventually.
  6. Image of Black JuiceBlack Juice
A collection of short stories. This is one that I’m adding to the Once Upon a Time list as it looks perfect.
  7. Image of Fool MoonThis is the second in the Dresden Files series.
I haven’t read the first so I’m not sure when I’ll get to this.
  8. Image of Long John SilverLong John Silver
Pirates! And that is all the explanation needed.
  9. Quozl I bought because I’ve heard good things about the author, Alan Dean Foster.
  10. Image of Cordelia's HonorCordelia’s Honor
I’ve read one or two by the same author, and enjoyed her books so I’ll give this one a go at some stage. Mind you, this is one of her sci-fi ones and I’ve only read her fantasy previously.
  11. Image of Tree and Leaf ; Smith of Wootton Major ; The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth, Beorhthelm's SonTree and Leaf ; Smith of Wootton Major ; The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth, Beorhthelm’s Son
I’ve had this Tolkien book on my shelves for ages and ages. No idea why I haven’t actually read it yet, but it is another I’m adding to my Once Upon a Time reading list.
  12. Image of FablesFables: Wolves
I don’t actually own this yet. But I still really want to read it, so I’m listing it here :)

Two things

Posted by: Fence   in Books, Ramblings

First of all I’d like to join with Carl and say “I’m a bookaholic.”

It was only last week that I’d never been in the brand spanking new Chapters[1] shop on Parnell st., but once I’d been I just kept returning. Picking more books that I know I never really intended to buy. I just kept picking them up going, “hmmm, why not?” Sure they’re only cheap.[2]

And then today I wandered about Waterstones, you know, cause 3 for 2 offers just can’t be ignored. Picked up my three, and then spotted this:

Image of Black Juice

Liked the cover, and so despite it being a hardback and the fact that I’ve never read anything by the author, and that I don’t usually buy short story collections, I decided “ah, sure I might as well.”

Onto the second item on today’s agenda:
Some of you may be aware that the ‘zine Estella’s Revenge has been a little quiet of late. But never fear, it hasn’t gone away. Instead it is being rethought and redeveloped, and will now be concentrating solely on books.

If you’re interested in contributing feature articles, reviews, fiction, or any other tasty, bookish niblet, let us know ASAP!

New writers are welcome, and the new edition should be out March 1st.

Just call me Oscar

I officially hate everyone!

Okay, so I’m not at the “lip curling, teeth bared” stage quite yet, but the stabbing people in their soft underbellies with pens[1] sounds about right. It isn’t really that they’ve done anything specifically to annoy me, but somehow everything they do is annoying me. What with their walking and their talking. What is that all about?

So I headed off to amazon for some impulse purchases, and what I’ve ordered is:

  • The Rest Falls Away by Colleen Gleason, Carl liked it, as did Quixotic and I haven’t spotted it in any offline bookshops. And Play doesn’t have it, which is why I went to amazon despite now having to pay for postage.
  • Vampire Diaries: The Awakening Ive no idea what this is about, but it was something like €4 and “recommended” so I figured what the hell.
  • The Black Jewels Trilogy by Anne Bishop, cause one of my book groups is reading it.

After my ever-so-boring afternoon at work I headed off to browse through book shops yesterday evening. And damn you Waterstones with your three for twos, and your half price books. I came away with

  1. We Need To Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver, which been seeing everywhere and meaning to pick up for ages. Afterall, who doesn’t want to read about a kid who massacres his schoolmates, and find out about his parents’s response?
  2. Marley and Me by John Grogan. The book that makes everyone cry. puppy-dogs + death = tears, it is a well known equation. I first heard about this when listening to TodayFM on the train to Sligo, when their cynical, hates everything journalist guest[1] reviewed it. I was going to wait til it came out in pbk, but half price hbk means it is probably cheaper now. And though I prefer pbks, I’m hardly one to resist a bargain, plus waiting is totally for losers dude.
  3. The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud. First in a trilogy that I’ve to read with for one of my online groups. Everyone seems to love it. Kids, fantasy, magicians. The whole shebang.
  4. Temeraire by Naomi Novik. I’ve seen this listed on quite a few people’s Library Thing catalgoues, so I picked it up to read the blurb. And, it is Napoleonic. With dragons. I had to take it.

And, as you possibly might have guessed I then went to see Lady in the Water which I enjoyed. But I think I’ll have to go again. It is an odd film. Full of cliche, but also very whimsical.

You also may have noticed my not mentioning the football, cause OMG!! wtf was that?, to get all technical on you.
