Everyone loves stats. And everyone who has a blog loves learning who came a-visiting and why. So, with thanks to Statcounter I’m revealing 13 questions or queries that people wanted answers to on my site.

  1. how believable is die hard 4.0 - I’m guessing not very. Afterall, the whole premise is pretty unbelievable, never mind the fact that John McClane “kills a helicopter with a car”. Still it is entertaining. And that is more important than reality. As reality tc has taught us.
  2. name of the song from the prison break ad on rte2 - Hmm, there are two. One of them is by Arcade Fire, I can’t remember the exact title, but I think it is Intervention. The other one, which mixed different programmes together, The Sopranos, Prison Break amongst others is by The Mission UK and is called Father
  3. what book was the movie alpha dog based on - It was based on the true story of Jesse James Hollywood, and from what I know it wasn’t based on any book at all.
  4. To the person who came looking for the most violent fairy tale I really don’t know what to say. Originally they were all pretty violent, but over the years they’ve been sanitized. Red Riding Hood has a lot of violence. A granny being eaten by a wolf. A woodsman chopping open a wolf. Lot of blood there. Snow White and the Seven Dwaves likewise. Okay, so the evil queen’s henchman didn’t cut open Snow White’s chest cavity and pull out her heart, but he did do that to a deer. Anyone else want to provide some blood-soaked fairy tales?
  5. what do you wear to a baptism if you are the godmother - I asked the very same question at one stage. No definite answers. Just remember a baby will be involved to nothing to white :)
  6. To the person who wanted to see hurling and lucozade sport ad 2007 I’m sorry, but I can’t help you. I was looking at one stage and couldn’t find it either. There are plenty of other GAA ads on YouTube though.
  7. brent pope rugby bio - Well, there is a bit here and a little bit more here, but if you’re looking for a whole book I can’t see one. He does write children’s books though
  8. ‘jack rackham’ pre-pirate - Try wikipedia
  9. song words little musgrave - planxty - Well, you can Listen here. And read here. Planxty are mighty altogether :) aren’t they?
  10. Gene Hunt huntisms - I have a collection here, but you might also want to take a look here as well
  11. what is idris elba im address - now what sort of a question is that? Do you know him? Well then ask him, otherwise leave him alone. I’m sure he has an agent you can contact. Try IMDb
  12. cheyenne, matrilineal society - Now this is a controversial topic. Cause yes, they were matrilineal, in that the family name went through the mothers. Stands to reason really. Only women can be sure that a child is in fact theirs. Or at least according to some anthropologists. Others say not. Try looking for articles and research in your local library. Or Google Scholar might be a good place to start.
  13. rugby - you really need to be a little more specific in your searches.

Thirteen Things about Lugh

  1. The end of July or start of August marks Lughnasa which is the Celtic harvest festival. In Ireland, summer is technically over now[1] August is the first month of Autumn, or Fall for you all from the US. The festival takes its name from Lugh, or Lug, or Lú.
  2. Lúnasa, from Lugh, is the Irish word for August.
  3. Lugh is pronounced with a silent gh.
  4. Supposedly the word leprechaun comes from Lugh.
  5. Lugh was also known as the many skilled; he was a wright, a smith, a champion, a swordsman, a harpist, a hero, a poet and historian, a sorcerer, and a craftsman.[2]
  6. He was also known as Lugh of the long-hand, and in Welsh[3] as Lleu Llaw Gyffes, or Lleu of the Dexterous Hand. In Gaul he is known as Lugus.
  7. There are also certain parallels with the Norse God Odin[4]
  8. Lugh led the Tuatha de Dannan[5] in battle against the Fomorians[6] in the Second Battle of Moytura
  9. Lugh fought and killer Balor, of the evil eye, and the Fomorians were defeated.
  10. Lugh is also supposed to have invented the game of fidchell which is similar to chess, but we don’t really know the rules. Ficheall is the modern Irish word for chess.
  11. In the Ulaid or Ulster mythology cycle Lugh is said to have been Cúchulainn’s father. And in the Táin Bó Cuailnge he healed Cúchulainn’s wounds after the Ulster champion was single-handedly defending the province. The other men of Ulster being incapacitated due to the Curse of Macha.[7]
  12. In some areas under Roman control Lugh was romanized and identified as Mercury, and later with the Archangel Michael.[8]
  13. One of his wives had an affair with Cermait and Lugh killed him[9] In return Cermait’s sons drowned Lugh[10] in loch Lugborta and buried under a cairn

Thirteen Things about Me

  1. I shall go to football this evening. Unless it rains.
  2. I’m already hacking my lungs up, so running about in the rain would be silly.
  3. I should go buy some cough medicine, but laziness intervened.
  4. And I’ve run out of my throat lozenge thingies.
  5. Well, not run out, but forgotten, or lost. Whatever, it all means the same thing. I don’t have any with me.
  6. Yes, I could pop out and buy some, but you know, the whole laziness thing.
  7. I was going to mention the fact that, once again, I haven’t become a millionaire, but the lotto site is taking an age to load. I may have won another tenner!
  8. I’ve started getting back into SG-1 again. It isn’t as good with the new crew, I miss Jack, but it is still entertaining enough crap.
  9. I’ve also started watching Profiler. SciFiUk are showing it at 6 everyday. According to IMDb it had 4 seasons. Who knew it lasted so long?
  10. I’m thinking of converting. Or possibly even getting ordained.
  11. I’ve been wasting time lately tidying up tags. You know, converting all my ones that say bored, or yawn, etc to say Bored Now! It is time consuming and pointless.
  12. That is the point of all procrastination though, right?
  13. I’m really looking forward to this year’s world cup. Yes, it doesn’t start until September, but have you noticed how fast this year is going? If I don’t mention it now, I’ll blink and suddenly before I can say, dude, the rwc is almost here, it’ll be over.

Thirteen Things about cats I’ve had

  1. The first cat I remember having was Blackie. This was back in Dublin, so don’t remember much about her. She had a kitten that we kept, named Sooty. Yes, we are terribly original when it comes to our cat names.
  2. After we moved our neighbours called around and deposited a kitten with a gammy eye with us. We were told it was female, so we named it Cleo. But it soon turned out that Cleo was in fact a Leo. As Tom cats do, he took to wandering off for days on end, and then one day he didn’t come home.
  3. After that we spotted an ad for a stray that needed a new home, so we got a new cat. She, yes we checked this time, was white, which meant that you could really see the fleas as they moved about her coat. She was the first cat I ever gave a bath to, and hopefully she’ll be the last. She became known as White Cat.
  4. A few months after we got White Cat we were surprised to find a ginormous tabby cat on our windowsill. It turned out to be C/Leo, complete with still gammy eye. He hadn’t been killed on the road as we thought, but had been off doing what Tom cats do around the neighbourhood.
  5. Whitecat and BabyWhite Cat had numerous litters of kittens. We kept one, an all black one that we called Black Cat. Or sometimes, Baby Cat. She also had one or two litters of kittens. Usually around the same time as White Cat so they’d share the raising duties. White Cat would never, ever mew, or make any sound. Totally silent, but a great hunter of mice and rats. We’d often find the dead bodies about the garden.
  6. We’d name all these kittens. Once after the characters in Brisco County Jnr, another time after those in Bear in a Big Blue House. Once, taking the dog for a walk I turned around to discover two cats and a line of kittens following me down the road. It looked cute, but I had to take them home. Then we decided enough was enough and got both cats spayed. And pretty soon after Black Cat got knocked down, and White Cat disappeared.
  7. After that we got another kitten from different neighbours. This was actually a relation of one of our previous cats, as we’d given them a kitten a few years before.
  8. She got called Lucy Locket, from the rhyme, I’m not quite sure why. And she was taken from her mother at too young an age, and was always a bit strange. Her first litter of kittens died, I think a Tom got at them, but I’m not sure. We had her spayed after her second litter, and kept one of her kittens, who we called Kitty Fisher.
  9. Lucy and Kitty lasted a good few years, but then Kitty got knocked down. And a few years after that Lucy died.
  10. We remained cat-free for a while after that. I think our next cat was an orange tabby. But I’m not sure, as I wasn’t living at home any more. Anyways, she died on the road.
  11. cat in pramOur next cat was Missy, also an orange tabby, who went through the wars and even lost an eye[1] before disappearing. We think she got hit by a car but we aren’t sure. After that we decided that the road was really too dangerous to get any more cats, so we’d stick with the mutt.
  12. DSCF0862But then de mudder found a little cat wandering the streets, and after asking around and finding no owner, took him in. He is quite an affectionate cat, but he is also a terrible bawler and moaner. He’ll whine and cry and mewl for food, when there is plenty in his bowl, it just isn’t tasty enough for him. And he’ll bawl to get out, and then sit on the window and bawl to get back in.
  13. He’s been neutered so hopefully there’ll be no wandering from him, and he has made it a good few months, so maybe he has learned that the road is to be avoided. We think he may have learned this lesson as a while ago the sound of brakes squealing was heard and he was then located crying under the shed, and had a few wounds. I doubt he was actually hit, they were very minor scrapes, but maybe he’ll have been scared enough to stay away.

Thirteen of my favourite films, that I own on DVD cause otherwise we might be here for a while

  1. Dog Soldiers dir. Neil Marshall. I adore this film. It has soldiers, and werewolves, and humour, and blood and guts and gore. And Kevin McKidd. Brilliant.
  2. A Knight’s Tale dir. Brian Helgeland. This is just so very watchable. Fun and entertaining. And horses. And knights. What more could you want.
  3. LA Confidential dir. Curtis Hanson. What can I say? Great performance by Russell Crowe, I loved his character in this. And Guy Pearce’s performance was great too. Hell, everybody’s acting was great.
  4. The Lord of the Rings dir. Peter Jackson. Yes yes, three films, but I’m including them as one overall work. Because I can.
  5. Once Upon A Time in Mexico dir Robert Rodriguez. Best of this trilogy, imo. And Johnny Depp’s character. Fanatastic.
  6. Once Were Warriors dir. Lee Tamahori. Violent and depressing. But a great film.
  7. Open Range dir. Kevin Costner. I was totally surprised by how much I enjoyed this film. It has everything, violence, death, romance, gun fights, cuteness. And wonderful wonderful scenery.
  8. Withnail and I dir. Bruce Robinson. Sheer Genius.
  9. Pitch Black dir. David Twohy. Great sci-fi horror flick. Ignore the sequel, cause really, it has nothing to do with this film.
  10. The Lost Boys dir. Joel Schumacher. 80’s nostalgia how are ya? Plus, Keifer Sutherland goodness. All good.
  11. Brotherhood of the Wolf dir. Christophe Gans. I love this film. The cinematography is wonderful. The characters are great. The Beast is perfect. All in all it just works so well.
  12. Wedding Crashers dir. David Dobkin. Hilarious. Pure and simple.
  13. Moulin Rouge dir Baz Luhrman. Musical melodrama at its finest.

TT #23

Posted by: Fence   in Honk, Weekly memes

Wow, can you believe that I’ve been doing this Thursday Thirteen stuff for 23 weeks now?

TT23
I was wondering what to do for this week’s Thursday Thirteen but then I got an email from Carl, linking to this post and providing perfect inspiration. So this T13 is a couple of responses to that post. And yes, I know, I shouldn’t feed the troll, but what the hell, I may as well.

  1. Have you ever noticed how much fantasy readers read? It’s really astonishing. … Of course, they’re really proud of this chew-through-the-phonebook capacity.

Proud? Not so much. I don’t care how much I read, why would a word count of what I’ve read be something to be proud of?

  2. The 80 people who did the “challenge read four or five books from different fantasy sub-genres (Like, I guess, books with two-handed broadswords vs. books with crossbows)

Ah, ignorance. There really is nothing like it is there? Talk about moaning over something that you really know nothing about.

  3. Here’s the prob, though: There isn’t anything remotely “challenging about this project. If you find it challenging to read a bunch of fantasy books, you need to … well, I don’t know what you can do, frankly. I was going to say “take some classes at your local community college, but I’m not sure that would do it.

Again, ignorance shines through. The challenge was to read books that you wouldn’t usually. It had nothing to do with the “quality” of the books themselves. It was simply to take a look outside your comfort zone. If I’m totally honest, I didn’t really do that as I’m already a fantasy fan and so my challenge was to read new authors[1] or books[2] that I’d been putting off.

  4. And the books … that shining duo of modern literature, Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman … The Princess Bride, miscellaneous stuff by That Goddamned Terry Pratchett … a bonecrushing load of Neil Fucking Gaiman

So I’m guessing you see something wrong with those authors? What exactly is that? Weis & Hickman write entertaining, if derivative fantasy. The Princess Bride is a wonderful book. Terry Pratchett is a genius. Neil Gaiman? You are giving out about people reading Neil Gaiman? And yet you haven’t given me a single reason why you dislike these authors.

  5. Also Sheri S. Tepper – and by the way, Tepper readers, why didn’t any of you go with The Gate to Women’s Country? It’s the one thing she’s written that deserves to go down in history as a significant work of feminist lit. Read it.

Why? Because you say so? I’ve read some of Tepper’s work. It is okay, but she gets far too preachy for my personal taste. I’ve no problem with works of fiction having a message, but I really don’t need to be hit over the head with a giant hammer to get the fact that being hit in the head hurts. Also, instead of simply stating your viewpoint as an absolute fact why not try to persuade me. Give me one reason why I should read The Gate to Women’s Country and maybe I will. Then again, maybe I won’t.

  6. But none of these books are challenging. They aren’t daunting in structure or syntax … only a tiny minority of them will still be talked about 50 years from now. They’re bedtime reading — superlatively crafted bedtime reading in some cases, but bedtime reading nonetheless.

And this really is the crux of the matter isn’t it? You want us to read “challenging” books. You seem to want to foist your interpretation of what makes a great book on us. But here’s the thing, that isn’t what this reading challenge was about. You seem to have misinterpreted the whole exercise. Who cares what people will be talking about in fifty years time? But also, if you haven’t read a book how will you know whether or not it is worthy of discussion? I won’t know if the De Vinci Code is really a great thriller or a mindless piece of crap until I read it.

  7. Like, who cares if a bunch of nerds want to congratulate themselves for finishing American Gods in three nights flat.

Again with the straw man argument? We weren’t reading these books in order to pat ourselves on the back. Merely to read the books, maybe enjoy them, and share that experience. The only congratulating being done was because a target had been set, and met. And there is nothing wrong in that. But not one review or site I visited was congratulating itself on reading as many books as possible in as short a time as possible. But you know, feel free to make stuff up to suit your post.

  8. Even though these people have nothing whatsoever to do with me or my life (beyond feeding a sort of amorphous anxiety about the future of Real Literature) they really, really irritate me

I’ve no problem with you being irritated by us. Feel free, but you know what an easy solution would be? To switch off. If you don’t like something, and it doesn’t have any connection to you then don’t watch/read/interact with it. It is simple. Don’t like Big Brother, then don’t watch it[3] Don’t like CSI[4] then change the station. Don’t like this reading challenge, then don’t play along.

  9. I just can’t stand it when nerds act all superior about their stupid crap. I read a lot too, you know. But I don’t want a freaking medal for it.

Who was acting superior[5] Who wanted a medal?

  10. So cut it out, nerds! Take the FanDumb challenge: This month, read some fantasy-inflected Real Lit. Like Jonathan Carroll or Madison Smartt Bell. Or Mark Danielewski or Jonathan Lethem or Kazuo Ishiguro. You won’t finish as fast, but you’ll annoy me a hell of a lot less.

Who says I won’t finish them as fast? As though that is even a goal! Also, who says we haven’t read these authors. I don’t just read one thing. I’ve read Carroll, and I’ve read Weis & Hickman, and I’ve read Tolkien, and I’ve read Ishiguro, and I’ve read Homer, and I’ve read Plato, and I’ve read Mieville, and I’ve read Gaiman and Pratchett and Rowling and Whitman, and Heaney, and, well I could go on, but why bother? I don’t just read one genre, I’ve read fantasy, and sci-fi, and post-colonial studies, and historical fiction, and so-called Literature, and modern classics and Shakespeare and science and history and fanfic[6] and, well, pretty much any genre there is, apart from tentacle porn[7] So who do you think you are, that you can tell me, or any one else, what they should be reading?

  11. But you know what the biggest problem with that post was? The tone of it. Full of “I’m looking down my nose at you, you smelly silly stupid fantasy reader you”. That isn’t really likely to change anyone’s mind is it? You want to persuade me to try a new author by telling me that the ones I enjoy are shite? Yeah, I don’t think you are going to get very far with that attitude. Tell me why you like something, why you love something, and then I probably will give it a go.
  12. I might not like it. I might disagree with you. I might hate it. Doesn’t mean I’d have to insult you. Taste is entirely subjective. The only reason that the canon of classics exists is because a group of people decided that these books were somehow worthy. They enjoyed them, or got something out of them, people wanted to read them and so they were read. Any regular readers here will know that I’m not a huge fan of labels and defining X as not being Y. To me, most of what is great uses different elements mixed together. After all, that is what life is isn’t it? For example, Firefly is a sci-fi show[8] it is, afterall, set in space, but it is also a romance, a war story, a crime caper, a drama, a comedy, a character study. Sure, I use labels, but I’m also prepared to look beyond that label, because a label is just that, something stuck on, for convenience’s sake.
  13. I have absolutely no problem with people disagreeing with me, or liking what I hate, or hating what I love. Just don’t think that because I read and enjoy crap like Jilly Cooper that I am incapable of reading and enjoying more “worthy” tomes. But please, if you think you know anything about me because I participated in one reading challenge? Yeah, nuff said.
