Okay, can some one kindly tell me where this last year has gone? Cause look, it is time for this year’s RIP Challenge. Decisions decisions. But I think I’ll go with the first peril, reading any four books from any subgenre of scary-ness. I just got to go find them now. I think that The Host by Stephenie Meyer qualifies, so that’ll be one. And I’ll have to take a gander through the tbr pile to see if any of those fit. And then probably a trip to Chapters and book buying. But its all good, I haven’t been there in at least 2 months, I’ve been very good about not buying books. I think it is time for a splurge.
I haven’t quite managed to keep up with the two proper blogs a week that I mentioned a while back. But you know, intentions are worth just as much as deeds, right?
Yeah, okay, so thats a lie. But you just gotta deal.
Spent most of Sat. watching the telly. Well, I say telly, I mean dvds. And I know that I’ve mentioned this before, but I just love Rocky Balboa. It is just brilliant. Full of cliché and sentimental shots, but it just works. Rocky just works. Still have to watch the commentary, that’ll be fun.
I’ve been doing a fair bit of rewatching stuff lately. Over the past few weeks I’ve been rewatching Firefly. Its been a while. Don’t think I’ve seen any of those episodes since the film[1] came out. And that was years ago[2] It is so great. Every time we’re about to watch a new episode I say “oh this is a great one” or “I love this one”. We just got up to Out of Gas last week. Awww. Watching them all get together and seeing Mal fall in love with the ship.
Oh, and while I’m moaning about time flying, when did it get to be the end of August? For those of you not in Ireland, well, maybe you lot got a summer. Us, we got rain. Followed by more rain. Followed by some more.
So where was our summer? huh? Life is so unfair sometimes…

Shiny! I just got my special edition Serenity in the post. It had to come all the way from Amerikay, but it is shiny shiny shiny.
I just gotta find time to watch it now.
As you may have guessed from the lack of posting- hang on, that isn’t strictly true as I have posted a few reviews, but there have been less of my ramblings than usual, so I’ll reword that sentence: As you may have guessed from the reduction in my ramblings I’ve been a little busy lately. Yeah, more students around at work and whatnot, but that isn’t really the issue. I could easily post at home, no, I’ve been preoccupied with visiting pound shops and buying crap. Why, I hear you ask[1] . Well that is easy; we are holding a football awards night out tonight. And as the Organising Committee[2] I’ve been run off my feet coming up with award categories and deciding on who should win and getting prizes. And what wonderfully crappy prizes they are! Although who knew it’d be so hard to find something costing €2 and doctor related. Weren’t there like hundreds of crappy stethoscopes[3] about when you were a kid? Anyways, despite harrowing setback like that, and the fact that Hickey’s was closed by the time I got there last night and so couldn’t get the ribbon for the medals, I have every confidence that tonight will be a total success. Or at least a drunken night. I’ve been saving up my weekly unit limits and reckon I can get totally pissed and come to no harm.
That is the way it works right? As a ladddeeeee I get what, 14 units a week? And I haven’t had a drink in two and half weeks, and so I get to have 35 units. Thats a lot of vodka and diet coke.
Work tomorrow will be fun.
Oh, and the interests of staying positive let us not mention the ROI’s performance at Croke Park last night. Discretion and valour and all that.

Once more Joss posts on Whedonesque
Since everyone’s all abuzz with the CW rumor, I have to get all official and say: WE’VE STARTED FILMING NEW EPISODES!
See, that, the deliberate raising of our hopes, only to dash them. Dash them utterly:
Of Dateline. I’m such a troll.
No, there haven’t been any overtures from the CW as regards a SereniFly spin-off. I haven’t even heard the orchestra tuning up.

so there I was, making my usual round of blogs when I got to Whedonesque. I’d read last week about the rumours that a few of the Firefly actors had been seen leaving an exec building[1]
And now it appears as if we may be getting what we deserve:
Firefly. You gotta spill it if you have any additional info, please!
I’ve heard the CW is considering bringing it back as a series, miniseries or movie for next season. Hurrah! For you who missed my message board posting, on Tuesday, Nate Fillion, Summer Glau and Gina Torres were seen coming out of one of the exec buildings at Paramount, where they are putting together the new CW unit.
Course this is still all nothing but rumour and speculation, and given Joss’s comment saying that his phone is silent, lets not hope too much. (whedonesque may be down due to overload of people hoping and praying it is true)

Obviously as the end of the year is nigh we have to have a few “best of” lists, a review of the year. It is one of those unwritten rules. We’ve invented seconds, days, weeks, months, years and so have to mark them somehow, so without further ado, My top 5 films of 2005:
King Kong - I didn’t think this would make it to my list, but it has. A really great film, not without its flaws, but overall I really felt that it worked. Almost like three different films in one, we start off with the drama of Denham and the depression of the 1930’s, then once we reach the island we are launched into a horror monster movie, and the final third is the tragic love story. Needs to be seen on the big screen.
- Brotherhood of the Wolf - I know this didn’t come out in 2005, but I bought it and watched it for the first time back in March, and I love it. It is French, and subtitled[1] and the plot revolves around a mysterious beast, the Beast of Gevaudan, in the 1760’s. This creature, many believe it to be a wolf, is killing people so the Chevalier de Fronsac is sent to investigate. A very stylish film, it looks great.
- Downfall - The last few weeks of Nazi Germany as told by a young woman in Hitler’s employ, this film is a great look at Hitler the man. Yes it does have that cliche of the banality of evil, but you’ll be left incredulous by the behaviour of Hitler and his followers.
- Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - wonderful film with Robert Downey Jr and Val Kilmer. It’ll keep you laughing all through the film, but you’ll also fall in love with the character of Harry.
Serenity - Like I wasn’t going to mention this one
Sci-fi meets cowboys for the follow up to the tv series Firefly. It has got something for everyone, action, violence, humour, death, love, religion and belief. Just watch it.
And honourable mentions must go to:
- Batman Begins
- Howl’s Moving Castle
- Wedding Crashers
- The Woodsman
Now, off you go and do the Guardian film quiz, I got 22 out of 30, so don’t forget to post your score.
