It has become something of a habit with me that I spend a while browsing through AskMetaFilter reading the odd question and answer. Which is where I came across the question Do Waitstaff hate Change?, and in the middle of all the answers[1] was the fact that people usually tip 1.00 to 2.00 dollars on each drink in a bar. My response? Jayzis!
Now I know that the whole tipping culture over here is a lot different. We don’t assume that servers and bar staff live off of tips, I expect the owner of the pub/restaurant/whatever to pay the staff, that isn’t my job. My job is to buy drink. Course maybe that is why our drinks seem to be twice as expensive. I mean a pint is what, four to five Euro depending on what it is and where you are, and so adding on even one or two Euro to that would mean that a getting a round would be hugely expensive. But then again I don’t think I’ve ever tipped a barman in my life. Well, occasionally I’ve maybe said keep the change, but very very occasionally. Christmas-time. And only at the end of the night, not when actually paying for drinks. when i win the lotto I will, but apart from that, I don’t think so.
Course I do tip in restaurants but if any staff have the following attitude I think I’d not tip on principle:
tipping in change is an insult, no matter that four quarters equals a dollar. It’s a passive aggressive annoyance from people who think service staff are beneath them. If you argue this, you either need to get out more or learn to keep your cheap ass at home.
I know, I know, that is in the US where you have one dollar bills and tipping is a much bigger part of the the culture. But here, where the smallest note is a fiver and you’re often lucky to get one! Yeah, just expect the change.

Last night we had our first Wii related accident. The flatmate and her boyfriend bought a Wii a week ago or so. It has been over at his new place for most of the time, but came back on Friday. Course what with the rugby I haven’t had much time to play with it, but I’ve had a few goes, and it is fabtastic.
So after watching the return of Lost last night we had one quick game[1] of tennis before bed. But as it was late we decided not to bother standing up and playing properly, so we didn’t move the coffee table.
Can you tell where I’m headed yet?
Yup, attempting to get an ace the flatmate took an overenthusiastic swing, and bang, straight into her glass of wine which went flying in my direction.
Or should I saw the wine and shards of glass went flying. Luckily it all missed me, but the couch got a drenching. Didn’t stop us playing another game once we had cleaned it up.
Over at Metafilter they are discussing 24 and its impact on people’s willingness to accept torture. I’m not so sure that I’d go along with that, but that was one of the reasons I stopped watching the show. Ideological grounds
Some of the articles mentioned: Orwellian ideology of 24 - 24’s heroes as Himmler - Pop Matters.
But in news of a much better TV show, Life on Mars is back tonight. Yay! Course it conflicts with Battlestar, but I’ve been recording BSG anyways, so no real worries.

Look, we’re Nevada[1] So when do we become the main gambling and prostitution attraction of Europe?
And in more linking to stuff rather than come up with stuff of my own I give you dinosaurs and a dreamcoat, a ship and… well just take a look at some of the art on Philip Straub’s site[2]

Yet another warning, I may be altering the template again, there may be a problem with the commenting, so if you can’t see the submit button when you try to comment email me fencesitter at gmail dot com at let me know. If you can submit comments well then, there is no need to do anything. I suppose if you feel left out you could leave a comment, to prove it works, unless you are one of the bajillion spammers out there. In which case don’t leave a comment, cause it’ll only be eradicated by the anti-spam stuff and so you’ll have wasted your time.
Course if you are a spammer then you aren’t reading this at all, cause most likely your a spambot and so are programmed to annoy and make people make with the “grrrr” sound as they find yet another [insert name of drug] free here, or satisfy the woman in your life, or [insert own spam message]
Has anyone else noticed the most recent spam *trick*? The “please don’t delete these links, I need the money for my children” line that has been stuck at the beginning of some of my most recent spam comments. That weak plea is worthy of nothing save a most withering “Whatever dude, I totally believe you.”
Right, sin é, I’m off to sleep but before I do, a word of warning…
Don’t drink too much water. It’ll kill ya!
