Week 248

Published by Fence under Pointless, Ramblings

Drinking did occur last night. And indeed this morning. As a result I’m rethinking this whole 2 day weekend thing. I’m firmly of the belief that we should get three days off[1] It is the only thing that could make sense. Anyway, a good time was had, but I was on the Bulmers so I’m feeling slightly more groggy today than I would if it had been vodka. But that didn’t stop me having another pint this evening as we investi-magated the pub we’ll be using for the work Pub Quiz I’m organising.

But I know what you are all thinking, forget about that malarky and get onto the word association game, so tada,

all girls are princesses. Even snotty, two-face bullies

Published by Fence under Ramblings, Sport, TV

I’m hoarse today. So hoarse I can’t actually speak at all. Well, the odd croak and a bit of a wheeze. Totally the fault of the cough I have. And the playing football in the rain. Nothing whatsoever to do with the drunken singing in the pub. No siree bob!

So I spent the day watching telly. Showjumping at 11 or so. Quick hop out to the shops to pick up the essentials; Strepsils, cough medicine, sausages and wedges. Pour essentials. Then home to watch the GAA. Two hurling quarters were on. Tip v Wexford was on first. I switched it on thinking, ah sure, I’ll support Tip, you know, what with the family connection to that county. But then I found myself urging Wexford on. That old underdog sympathy thing got me. And they won. Which was great. And a drama filled ending.

The other quarter-final was between Kilkenny and Galway. Kilkenny being the favourites, and me having been to college in Galway I was going to cheer them on. But then I was reminded of Vanessa McGarry’s death by seeing her son and her husband (Kilkenny goalkeeper) in the players’ section of the stand and it seemed somehow wrong to be wishing the team till. Course, as some hurling fella said, life is real and can be tragic, but that is exactly why we have things like sport.

The other two quarters are on tomorrow; Luimneach v An Clár and Port Láirge v Corcaigh. I’ll be cheering on Limerick and Waterford. I think. Well, Limerick for sure. I’m not to definite about the other match. Waterford deserve their shot at glory. But then again, as I’ve mentioned before I do like to cheer Cork on. We’ll see how the teams play.

Anyway, back to my exciting adventures on the couch. I then watched bits of Coast as they were doing the West coast of Ireland today. I did miss most of it, but caught the end. Did you know that seaweed is used in the making of beer and ice-cream? Well, now you do.

After that it was time for Jekyll. The final episode. And it was good, but I’m not too sure about the final scene. Was a bit “we want a twist” rather than an ending. Still, I’ll be keeping my eye out for anything else that Steven Moffat writes.

I was thinking of going to bed then. But instead I pulled out a dvd; A Little Princess which I bought in a 3 for €22 thingie during the week. I’d watched it years and years ago when the kids I was babysitting had rented it. And it really is a beautifully shot and directed film. And the music is great too. And I discovered that Alfonso Cuarón directed it. I may do a proper review at some stage.

So, that was my thrilling Saturday. I know you couldn’t possibly have gotten upto anything more exciting than that! :)

Thirteen Things about Me

  1. I shall go to football this evening. Unless it rains.
  2. I’m already hacking my lungs up, so running about in the rain would be silly.
  3. I should go buy some cough medicine, but laziness intervened.
  4. And I’ve run out of my throat lozenge thingies.
  5. Well, not run out, but forgotten, or lost. Whatever, it all means the same thing. I don’t have any with me.
  6. Yes, I could pop out and buy some, but you know, the whole laziness thing.
  7. I was going to mention the fact that, once again, I haven’t become a millionaire, but the lotto site is taking an age to load. I may have won another tenner!
  8. I’ve started getting back into SG-1 again. It isn’t as good with the new crew, I miss Jack, but it is still entertaining enough crap.
  9. I’ve also started watching Profiler. SciFiUk are showing it at 6 everyday. According to IMDb it had 4 seasons. Who knew it lasted so long?
  10. I’m thinking of converting. Or possibly even getting ordained.
  11. I’ve been wasting time lately tidying up tags. You know, converting all my ones that say bored, or yawn, etc to say Bored Now! It is time consuming and pointless.
  12. That is the point of all procrastination though, right?
  13. I’m really looking forward to this year’s world cup. Yes, it doesn’t start until September, but have you noticed how fast this year is going? If I don’t mention it now, I’ll blink and suddenly before I can say, dude, the rwc is almost here, it’ll be over.

If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is because everything would be what it isn’t. And contrary-wise; what it is it wouldn’t be, and what it wouldn’t be, it would.

Many things to be done today. Review of A Midummer Night’s Dream. The reading of blogs. the leaving the comments on the blogs. the reading of emails. the replying to emails. the inane surfing. and the work. But I can’t be arsed.

The head is disconnected from the world for some reason today. Stuff is happening, I’m pretty sure of it, but I’m just meh meh meh. Distance. Or something. Fog. that’s it. There is a fog between me and the rest of the stuff that may or may not be occurring in the world. And jimmy cracks corn, but I don’t care.

Even an extra coffee this morning has done nothing to wake me up.

Maybe it’ll kick in later and I’ll go totally psycho. So if you return to find a whole host of posts written as though by someone on crack you’ll know why.

And in conclusion, a bunch of “naughty” words designed to increase the rating of my blog:
fuck. shit. Gobshite. fuck. death. blood. general naughtiness. crazy whacked out shit man. Drugs. I’m guessing the rating thingy won’t accept etc, but I just can’t be arsed to type any more. So I’m going to hit publish and then see what my rating is …

EDITED TO ADD Ha ha, my fiendish plan has succeeded. See, I is now R-rated. Mainly because I said death, hurt and slut at some point? Which seems odd. I wonder would they take slattern into consideration?

Yet another

Published by Fence under Weekly memes

Another weekly meme that is. The Friday five thing doesn’t really appeal to me anymore, not sure why. So instead I’m gonna do the Thursday Thirteen. Course this means I now gotta come up with 13 things every week. Not quite sure if I’ll manage it, but we’ll see.

Thirteen Things about ME

in other words, 13 things that are probably already listed in my 101 things page, but, as this is the first I figure I may as well start at the beginning

  1. I have 5 brothers and a sister. All younger than me except one.
  2. I don’t use real names on my blog
  3. The brothers are referred to as B#whereever they come in the family eg B#1, B#4 etc. Or sometimes I’ll simply say de brudder. Which can refer to any of them. As I only have the one sister you can figure out for yourselves how I refer to her.
  4. I like to lie.
  5. When I say lie I usually mean exaggerate for effect. So not strictly an untruth, more of a stretching, you know, like whatshisface in Big Fish.
  6. Then again, sometimes everything I say is exactly how it happened, it depends how imaginative I’m feeling.
  7. I’m usually quite good at starting things
  8. Which means I’m not quite so good at following through.
  9. Like many, many people, I procrastinate. If it weren’t for deadlines I’d never finish anything.
  10. But I don’t like to be late.
  11. As a matter of fact I’m usually early. Which is probably a reaction to de fadder always being late, or taking longer than he said. You know the way “I’ll be back in two minutes” ends up with you hanging around waiting for ten.
  12. Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol was the last song I listened to this morning before starting work.
  13. I only have a couple of hundred songs on my MP3 player but have around 10 gig waiting to be added. I’m procrastinating you see.

*sneeze*

Published by Fence under TV

So I have a cold today, was snuffly yesterday and today am a veritable snot-monster[1] so have been plonked in front of the telly watching shite. Not BSG season 3 episodes1 & 2 which I have recorded, cause that would be sensible, no, I’m watching shite.

A couple of episodes of The Dog Whisperer which seems to be yer man Cesare going round to people and telling them “dude, or dudette, you know that little four-legged thing running around, wagging its tail and barking? Well it really isn’t a person in disguise so stop trying to pretend it is.”

And then this evening I watched RTE’s Big Big Movie, kids films, because I couldn’t be bothered to even try and find something else. This week’s film was Ice Princess, which was full of familiar faces. The principal wan from School of Rock. Dawn from Buffy. Cheerleader girl from Heroes. And some skater wan as herself.

Twas all great, in that no thinking was required, but as I was watching/reading By The Sword I came to the conclusion that it was, in fact, a post-feminist kids’ flick. See Dawn[2] was this ultra bright girl who wanted to go to Harvard and study physics. Or did she… In order to get a scholarship she had to do a project, and she decided to do it on ice-skating and the physics involved in jumping and spinning and all that malarky. And as time passed she discovered that what she really wanted to do was skate.

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.usSomething her mother didn’t approve of, what with the costumes and the fact that it was all about being pretty, and that she should be a physicist because there was no shelf-life on your brain. But little whiney Dawn really wanted to skate. I won’t spoil the ending[3] and I’m probably reading far too much into it. Still thought it was amusing how her mother pressurised her into going to school and being brainy rather than being the pretty one; how times have changes.

Linknotes:
  1. and not the cute kind either
  2. no that wasn’t her name in the film, but who cares
  3. just in case you can’t guess

It’s not the right way, you know. Where did you see me go

Published by Fence under Ramblings

Why is it that when I wake at 4 on a Monday morning[1] it usually takes me at least 2 hours 30 minutes to get back to sleep. Whereas when the alarm wakes me at 7 and I hit snooze I fall asleep again straight away[2] Well? Well?

And why is that last 30 minutes of sleep so full of dreams? This morning there were incidents of changing clothes as I looked for something for work but could only find tracksuit tops[3] And then something about a film about a German soldier during WWII being recruited to go back to Germany as an undercover spy after he’d been captured and shown what was really going on. And then talking cats. Or maybe a cat that turned into a person. I can’t remember exactly.

Still, at least I know the origin of that last dream. Cause the family at home are in the process of possibly adopting[4] a stray cat which has been coming around. Only it is very shy, so whenever it gets spotted the sister and the mother put out food and then run inside. And much care must be taken before the beast is released from the confines of the house. You know, in case he devours it[5] So that is where the idea of the cat appeared from, I’m guessing. But it wasn’t that stray, because it is black and white, whereas the dream cat was a great big tabby. Although he[6] was round the side of the house where we’ve been feeding the stray. But he had something in his mouth, something soft and vaguely grey. Which I assumed was a rabbit, but didn’t think anything else until I found another cat sitting in the shed, and then as I turned around saw that Mr. Big Old Tabby actually had a kitten in his mouth.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usAnd once he realized that I knew that it has a kitten he dropped it, and that is when he spoke, saying something about the kitten having a broken leg, and he was only taking it away to be taken care of. But I knew what sort of taken care of he meant, and it wasn’t the nice kind. Oh, no. More the rabbit in a vice and look at this big old sword style of “taking care” of something.

Ah, Father Ted. Sheer genius.

While I was in Sligo I was discussing phones with the brother, he’s been thinking of getting a new one, but doesn’t want to go online to buy one, and hates the idea of going into a phone shop. Don’t ask me why. But his phone has died so he needs to get a new one. And over the weekend, the other brother’s phone also died. Or maybe was murdered would be a more accurate description. It was manslaughter at the very least. See he went fishing. As you do. And was walking into the lake a little. And then he went in a little further. The water just over his ankles.

And then he went a little further. Just a step or two. And suddenly he was waist high in water, and stuck. Couldn’t get himself out and had to wait for the cronies to come and pull him free. Although he did remember to get them to take a photo first. What he didn’t remember was to take his phone out of his pocket. And if the water didn’t kill it, then the hairdryer did.

So two new phones needed at home.

Speaking of the brothers, I decided to get them tickets to the rugby in November for their birthdays. One had his 20th in July, the other will be some age or other[7] in November. So I figured I’d get them two tickets. OMG! is the Irish rugby site slow? So slow that a slow snail could move faster. But I think I’ve managed it, two tickets for Ireland v Australia on Nov the 19th. Although I suppose I’m lucky that the brother couldn’t decide if he wanted an extra ticket or not, cause you are limited to 2 tickets per credit card. Not per person though. Which they could have done, because you have to log in as a supporter to get them, and then buy. So they are helping out rich peoples who have multiple credit cards. Unfair, says I.

Linknotes:
  1. in this case a Tues morning, but the difference is merely due to the bank holiday postponing things
  2. unless I get up, in which case I don’t fall asleep. because I’m up
  3. obviously unsuitable you know
  4. or, stealing someone else’s cat as B #4 puts it
  5. As far as he is concerned stray cats exist to be chased. If the adoption process runs smoothly I’m sure it’ll soon be sticking its head inside his mouth in total safety like tha last one
  6. it was a Tom cat, you can tell by the shape of the head, even in dreams
  7. I’ve told you before, there are too many to keep straight. He’ll be 18. Or 17. Can’t be more than that
