all girls are princesses. Even snotty, two-face bullies

Published by Fence under Ramblings, Sport, TV

I’m hoarse today. So hoarse I can’t actually speak at all. Well, the odd croak and a bit of a wheeze. Totally the fault of the cough I have. And the playing football in the rain. Nothing whatsoever to do with the drunken singing in the pub. No siree bob!

So I spent the day watching telly. Showjumping at 11 or so. Quick hop out to the shops to pick up the essentials; Strepsils, cough medicine, sausages and wedges. Pour essentials. Then home to watch the GAA. Two hurling quarters were on. Tip v Wexford was on first. I switched it on thinking, ah sure, I’ll support Tip, you know, what with the family connection to that county. But then I found myself urging Wexford on. That old underdog sympathy thing got me. And they won. Which was great. And a drama filled ending.

The other quarter-final was between Kilkenny and Galway. Kilkenny being the favourites, and me having been to college in Galway I was going to cheer them on. But then I was reminded of Vanessa McGarry’s death by seeing her son and her husband (Kilkenny goalkeeper) in the players’ section of the stand and it seemed somehow wrong to be wishing the team till. Course, as some hurling fella said, life is real and can be tragic, but that is exactly why we have things like sport.

The other two quarters are on tomorrow; Luimneach v An Clár and Port Láirge v Corcaigh. I’ll be cheering on Limerick and Waterford. I think. Well, Limerick for sure. I’m not to definite about the other match. Waterford deserve their shot at glory. But then again, as I’ve mentioned before I do like to cheer Cork on. We’ll see how the teams play.

Anyway, back to my exciting adventures on the couch. I then watched bits of Coast as they were doing the West coast of Ireland today. I did miss most of it, but caught the end. Did you know that seaweed is used in the making of beer and ice-cream? Well, now you do.

After that it was time for Jekyll. The final episode. And it was good, but I’m not too sure about the final scene. Was a bit “we want a twist” rather than an ending. Still, I’ll be keeping my eye out for anything else that Steven Moffat writes.

I was thinking of going to bed then. But instead I pulled out a dvd; A Little Princess which I bought in a 3 for €22 thingie during the week. I’d watched it years and years ago when the kids I was babysitting had rented it. And it really is a beautifully shot and directed film. And the music is great too. And I discovered that Alfonso Cuarón directed it. I may do a proper review at some stage.

So, that was my thrilling Saturday. I know you couldn’t possibly have gotten upto anything more exciting than that! :)

Opiate of the masses

Published by Fence under TV

I seem to have given up on my Rome recaps. That is a terribly wishy-washy sort of statement, isn’t it? I seem to have, you’d think I’d know whether I have or I haven’t. And considering that there is only one episode left to go, you’d have to think that yes I have given up. I think so. But the mood may strike me again, and I may scribble something down, but I blame the BBC. Showing two episodes a week, while cool and keeping me happy with the Rome-ness of it all, means that there isn’t much time before another episode appears. It also means that the season is now pretty much over.

They are starting Heroes next week. If you haven’t seen it and have BBC2 you should probably switch on. Tis quite fun, though not as great or as original as it seems to think it is.

The Sopranos came to an end last night. I had watched it on Vera on my train journey home last weekend, but that ending made me unsure of whether I had it all or not. Turns out I had. I’m in two minds about the ending. I don’t the episode, as a whole, was as good as some others this season. But I quite liked Show Spoilers ▼

This final season as a whole has been most excellent, and I’m coming round to the idea Show Spoilers ▼

I don’t think that matters. It was a perfect ending for The Sopranos. I wouldn’t like everything to end that way. But it worked. More discussion here, with unhidden spoilers, you have been warned.

So that is Rome and The Sopranos coming to an end. And I’d been quite enjoying the few Doctor Who episodes I caught this year, but now they are over too. So many things coming to an end. I suppose Prison Break is still running, but I’m more than a little meh’d at that show. Tis too silly, and with the constant, never ending stabbing each other in the back it gets a little repetitive. Although whatshisface, teabag? Show Spoilers ▼

And on account of various things I’ve been missing Jekyll which I was enjoying. But then again, I can play catch up, the flatmate has two episodes recorded, so I can play catch up at some stage.

And I have a few boxsets I should get to watching; Carnivale, Twin Peaks, The Wire. Plenty to keep me going.

Yeah, so Marx may have been referring to religion, but I’m not the only one to apply it to telly too.

The angels have the phonebox.

Wednesday seems kinda late in the week to be doing a round up of the weekend, doesn’t it? but we’re all just going to have to deal with the fact that this is happening. But in reality it needn’t happen at all, or I suppose it would be more accurate to say that it need not have happened, because we now have “the broadband” at home in the wilds of the countryside. Imagine that. And tis wireless, so many peoples can be internetting at the same time. So I could have gone online and blogged over the weekend. But I’ve gotten in the habit of not doing that when at home, so I didn’t.

There is no real news from the homestead. Although to my shame I must admit that I have now watched some of Big Brother, but in my defence I was actually watching a laptop[1] while BB was on the telly. See we don’t have a remote, so unless someone is feeling energetic and wants to stand by the telly flicking until something good comes on we often end up with shite after shite on the telly. And yes, a universal remote could have been purchased many moons ago, but de mudder things the boys should do that seeing as they have money and use that room. The telly in the other room has a remote, so she’s grand.

Most of Sunday was used up in the watching of the hurling and the football. Great news on the hurling front as Sligo won. Okay, so it was in the Nicky Rackard cup, which isn’t real hurling, but still, it’s all good. And just as good was the result from Munster, cause we got a result from the Tipp V Limerick match. And Limerick won. Celebrate good times and all that malarky. Unless of course you are from Tipp, in which case we must imitate Nelson and “Ha ha” at you in mocking tones.

Before I finished up at work last week I completed Carl’s Once Upon A Time reading challenge with a reading of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and if ever you are looking for a book to read the review site has plenty of ideas.

I also watched the second episode of Rome, which seemed to be a bit expositiony, but still great, unless of course you are Octavian and have just had Mark Anthony punching your lights out. Ah well, thems the breaks, never fear Octavian, soon you’ll rule the world and Anthony will be dead[2] Alas. and quite possibly alack.

I also watched that Jekyll and Hyde[3] thingy on the Beeb. Twas written by yer man Moffat, him what wrote that very good episode of Doctor Who with the stone angels and the creepiness[4] I still don’t like Annoying Nesbit[5] but the show is watchable enough for all that he is the star. It is a bit OTT and too shiny[6] for its own good, and the American business man character is badly written, but still. Watchable.

Lets see, anything else happen over the weekend. Took the mutt for a walk. Shouted at the cat to shut up and stop bawling. Played with the nephew. Made fun of the accident prone brother. All the usual stuff.

Today’s title is a line from Doctor Who, just because.
Linknotes:
  1. that was some knockout punch from Hattan. Never seen a KO result from a hit to the ribs
  2. Spoiler for, you know, Ancient History
  3. with the highly original name of Jekyll
  4. Not being a huge Who fan I havent caught most of the current run. But the ones I have seen have been entertaining enough. That one, Blink, was very good
  5. him from Cold Feet, which also stared Emily from Friends
  6. not in the Firefly sense, but in the flashy sense
