Voting cats. Maybe not.

Published by Fence under Current Affairs, Ramblings

So the voting is over, and the counting is over, and bloody FF got in again[1] Friday morning was not a good time to be around de mudder as the meeja were all saying that FF would get in with an overall majority.

Luckily that turned out to be not the case, they’ll still need someone’s help, maybe Labour, maybe the Greens. Who knows.

B #1 voted FF. But everyone else in de family went for the others, and wasn’t there much rejoicing[2] when Michael McDowell wasn’t elected.

Remember when I may possibly have aided and abetted a mouse murder?[3] DSCF0893Well on Sunday I may have done enough to redress the balance. Whiney cat came racing towards the house, pursued by two thrushes and carrying a third in his mouth. We’d've ignored the drama outside but then spotted that thrush #3 was still alive. A wee baby bird. Well, not too much of a baby, it had feathers and could flutter a little. So I nabbed the cat and brought him inside while we waited to see if the parents would return. Whiney cat was not at all impressed by this development, and he wanted everyone in the world to know. Whiney doesn’t even come into it, he moaned and demanded to be let out for half an hour, running from one window to the the next and then to the door.

Eventually, as we couldn’t spot the bird we let him out. Can you guess what happened next? Yeah, he caught it again, and once more dragged it towards the house, again being chased by the parentals. So we said we’d give it one more chance. And put up with the non-stop griping from the cat. It may have worked this second time as there was no sign of the bird after that, and on his next trip outside there was plenty of searching but no finding.

Course, one of the neighbouring cats could have got the bird either. But you know, I think we deserve marks for effort.

The cat has now also been collared and belled. Though what difference that’ll make is hard to say.

Oh, and I’ve also installed a plugin thingy that’ll publish these posts across on the livejournal as well. Because, sure I might as well.

Linknotes:
  1. yes, yes, there is the slightest of slight chances that FG will do it, but realistically speaking it is going to be FF
  2. I had a teeny bit of sympathy for him too, which was surprising
  3. remember?

I said the honourable member was a liar it is true and I am sorry for it. The honourable member may place the punctuation where he pleases.

Edited to add my opinion at the end of the post

Mary O’Rourke is a Fianna Fáil politician in her 70’s. She has served as Minister for Education in the past and is currently the leader of the Seanad(Senate). Recently she received the party nomination to run in the next election, this after losing her seat last time around.

When she won this right she made a comment that has gotten her in a bit of trouble, so I’ve decided to ask my international readers what they make of it. Obviously I’m not stopping any Irish people from commenting, I’m just curious is all.

In praising her team that help her win the FF nomination to run she complimented them by saying “They were there for me, and they worked like blacks.”

Discuss.

Cafe-bars and the Demon Drink

Published by Fence under Irishify

So did that post title get your attention, well this isn’t all that exciting. It is more of a complaint about Fianna Fail, the Publican Party (okay, stolen from a letter in the paper today).

For the few non-Irishers that exist, we have this minister for justice, Michael McDowell. Recently he’s been in the papers here because of his plans to introduce ASBOs, but also because of plans to try and introduce cafe-bars. Places where people can eat and drink at the same time, and so hopefully not get vomiting/fighting drunk all the time.

But then some politicians got upset. 14 FF backbenchers I believe. And Mr. McDowell decided, hmmm, maybe not such a great idea, instead he’s going to allow restaurants to serve a full range of alcoholic beverages (is this really so different?).

Everyone knows that there is a drink problem in Ireland. But personally I don’t see how limiting pub hours, and having them all end at the same time is ever going to help reduce drunken fights. But maybe, having people get used to eating and drinking (so drinking less) will help to change attitudes/practice. Of course it isn’t going to happen instantly, but anyone thinking we can stop night-time brawls with any sort of knee-jerk reaction is not too bright.

If people object to “drunken mobs” then maybe they should try and get more gardaí out on the streets, and so arrest anyone who is causing hassle. Of course, that’d cost more money wouldn’t it?

I’m not even going to go into the fact that there are a whole lot of non-drinkers and designated drivers being ripped off every time they go tot he pub to meet people. And as for mentioning the fact that not everyone who has a couple of drinks in a night is not a “father jack” type.

Minister McDowell

Published by Fence under Current Affairs, Irishify

has a speech on the release of those responsible for the death of Garda Jerry McCabe (apols if it is spelt with a G, have seen both versions). The full text is up on politics.ie

He makes a lot of good points (bloody FFers shouldn’t be allowed make sense), but I still don’t like the fact that FF only seem harsh of SR when election time roles around.
Make up your minds boys. Then again this is FF I’m talking about…
