You sir, are a silk stocking full of shit!

Look, look, Sharpe will be back on our screens this year. Mmmmm. Sean Bean.

Went up home to Sligeach on Fri. Twas de gasúr’s birthday recently so brought pressies with me, which he got on Sun and much enjoyed. Bob the Builder = success with 2 year old.

On Sat I left Sligo and headed all the way to Athlone to watch de brudder play rugby. They won, which was nice. I’m so used to supporting losing teams that it was quite surprising :) Final score was summat like 41-3 to UL Bohs. Trifficly exciting photos on facebook if you know me there.

In other news, nothingness continued.

Blah blah blah

Posted by: Fence   in Pointless, Ramblings

Attn:This will be nothing more than a boring whats going on post. No complaining now:, you’ve been warned.

Work is loike, mad busy, roight. Full of scrambling[1] about and nagging lecturers[2] to send me their course outlines. And, apart from a few, mainly getting them instead when students come in looking for a book and me going “ooh, can I copy your outline to see what new books I need to order”. Sillies.

That is my excuse for not blogging earlier.

Also, I’m thinking of changing either the template or maybe just the header for the Rugby World Cup[3] I do have a vague template in mind, but it might just be less hassle to get a new header image. Decisions decisions.

In other news this month’s Estella’s revenge is out, so you’ll have plenty to read there.

Was talking to de mudder on the phone. She confused me by telling me they[4] were in Galway moving B#5 into his new home. He has to register tomorrow, first year at college.. I was confuddled cause he isn’t going to Galway but to Limerick. But of course what she meant to say was that they had been in Limerick and were now in Galway on their way home. Course he’ll be in Galway as well tmro[5] as he has training. Fingers crossed he doesn’t get lost on the way up :) I rang de mudder cause she had texted me earlier, saying there was post for me. A rugby banner thing that B#4 had opened by mistake[6] A soft package-y thing[7] And a letter that looks like it is something official from Donegal. Donegal? I don’t think I applied for any jobs up in that foreign land, and if I had would I have used the Sligo address? Hmmmm. I suppose we’ll have to wait til she gets back and opens it.

I’ve told her if it is exciting to let me know otherwise I’ll get it whenever I get home. I hope it isn’t something like anthrax[8]

We make excitment happen!

Posted by: Fence   in Ramblings, Sport

Today is a bank holiday. Yay! Day off. Four day week, and all that malarky. And what have I decided to do today? I know what you are thinking, oooh something exciting, possibly involving finally launching my plans to take over the world, but alas, no. I’m tidying[1] my room. Isn’t that thrilling? So far I have found approximately three hundred plastic bottles. Some empty, some with a few drops of water, some half full. I think I’m responsible for that hole in the ozone layer[2] but what can you do? I’m also thinking of building a new leaning tower, the leaning tower of books that I really should donate somewhere out of my room. They are threatening to topple over, I’ll have to require all visitors to my room to sign a disclosure of some description.

In other, less important news, the Leaving Cert begins this week[3] on Wednesday to be precise. The last of de brudders will be sitting it. I really should have some sort of sympathy for him, should I? But no, instead I’ll sit here and laugh[4] at him. Course he is pretty sorted. He got accepted to the rugby academy thingy[5] in Limerick, so all he has to do now is get enough points to do a proper course there and he’ll be happy. The problem is that he has spent so much time playing the rugby this past year that he didn’t actually do much studying.

I spent yesterday watching the GAA. The Waterford Kerry match was as boring as… well, I can’t quite think what else might have been that boring, Kerry won. Easily. Waterford got all of 4 points. But then I watched the Dublin Meath encounter. And that was much better fun. As first I was a bit worried cause Meath didn’t score at all in the first 20 minutes, but then they got stuck in, or maybe Dublin did their usual “omg! we’re in front, what do we do now”. It is weird, when I first moved to Sligo I totally didn’t get the whole anti-Dublin thing. And would always support Dublin. I was born here after all. But I think I’ve really turned into a culchie, cause I was half hoping that Meath would win. Especially after that goal that wasn’t. But at the same time I wasn’t too bothered either way. And so when Geraghty started throwing the odd punch I decided to support Dublin again. But then again, I didn’t. In the end it was a draw, and they get to “have at each other” all over again in two weeks time. Should be fun. I’d say that Meath might do it, but you never know.

I’m thinking I should support Dublin. I live here. I was born here. Rationally speaking I should support them, right? But I don’t. This summer I think I’m going to change that and tell myself to support them. Just like I tell myself I should support Leinster rugby ahead of Munster rugby.

Yea, like that works.

blah de blah

   Posted by: Fence   in Ramblings

I have nothing to say, but on account of not blogging yesterday I sorta feel like I should just stick something down here today.

I miss Anne, but no doubt she if off settling into NY and far too busy to blog. Kelly is back and blogging though. So yay! for that.

But like I said, I have nothing to say.

I did however buy a new phone. I know, I know, it hasn’t been that long since my last phone purchase. Nowhere near my usual yearly purchase, but I figured, what the hell, and I didn’t really like my motorola. I was going to go for the cool looking Sony Ericsson Z310i, but although it looked nice it didn’t have many features. So instead I went for the Nokia 6234, which is teeny tiny and packed full of features. Of course now I gotta do the “transfer everything I had on my old phone over to my new phone” thing. Which’ll be fun, boys and girls, won’t it? Especially considering that Motorola’s sync software would play nice with Vera and so i don’t have anything at all saved apart from on the phone. See how I make trouble for myself.

And I totally forgot to mention that the All-Ireland kicked off last weekend. And you be delighted to hear that Sligo won their opening round. Then again, we were playing New York, so anything other than a victory woulda been a disaster.

And B#5 got his place in the Limerick sports/rugby academy thingy that he was looking for, so now he can do his leaving without worrying about points. At least I think he can, I presume he’ll have to pass in certain subjects, but to be honest I haven’t a clue.

And while I’m saying nothing, does anyone know what time the polling stations close at in the election? Need to figure out what time I have to leave Dublin at.

Just hush!

   Posted by: Fence   in Sport

So, instead of rugby this blog will know turn its attention to… cricket! Nah, not really, though I have watched some of our winning ways. Who knew that failed[1] furrin[2] crickteers could play so well? Or, if I’m being honest, who really cared. Still, now that they are out there winning, and fans are singing olé olé olé[3] the rest of us will be happy to see them do well.

In case you all didn’t know, the Six Nations finished up on Saturday. We were playing first, on account of the BBC organising things. Bloody English! And the match was one of the most entertaining, plus we scored over 50 points. All good. You know, apart from that last minute try from Italy after we really should have put the ball out of play, but no point in moaning. As B#5 said, sure, no matter what we scored those french fuckers’d[4] probably go one better. But we had such high hopes [5] as it looked like Scotland might just do enough. But no, bloody crappy refs asking stoooopud questions when everyone and their dog could see that there was no grounding visible, therefore the benefit of the doubt must go to the defending team, and therefore you may NOT award the try should have been Mr. TMO’s call.

But, what can you do? Pray for payback come the Autumn, that’s what. So you’d better watch out then.

I would have loads and loads of photos of the terribly exciting and thrilling St. Patrick’s Day Parade from Sligo, only as B#3 was invest-igamating the new camera he hit the delete all button. I saved some, but not all. Mainly the attention grabbing parade consisted of bands. Marching pipe bands. In rain gear.

You are my sunshine - Redux

Posted by: Fence   in Shiny, Sport

My only sunshine, you make me happy when skies are grey!

What a match. What a result. Role on Scotland and Italy.

Super Saturday or what? The fun started before I went to bed on Friday[1] when B#5 texted me to say he’d gotten his hands on a ticket for the big match. Bad news was that he couldn’t get me one, his was a schoolboy one that some fella didn’t want. Don’t know why, he asked no question just grabbed it. His train got into Dublin around 3 on Sat., so I was busy texting him the insane opening scores from the Italy Scotland match. 21-0 after 7 minutes, and Scotland’s nightmare start was all down to their own sloppiness. Part of me really wanted Scotland to make a come back, I was giving out to Mr. Paterson for not taking any of the points on offer. Constantly kicking for touch and never getting near scoring a try! But a little part of me wanted Italy to win[2] Historic, seeing as they’d never won a Six Nations away match before. And if they’d lost after those early tries it would have been heartbreaking. It’ll be really interesting to see them face Wales, I’m thinking that the Wooden Spoon might be headed Wales, despite the fact that they finally managed to score some tries in this year’s competition. But I’m getting ahead of myself. After the Scotland match came the Ireland match.

And the tension was such that I had to put away the beer, couldn’t be drinking as I had to concentrate on the match. But before that came the appearances by the teams, and the crowd gave the English team a great reception. Nothing compared to the reception they gave Ireland, but still nice to see. And after all that had been written and talked about regarding GSTQ, there wasn’t even the slightest hint of trouble[3] Instead it was sung and listened to with respect, before Amhrán na bhFiann and Ireland’s Call were belted out, with so much emotion[4] that tears were shed. And then, the match itself.

The opening was a bit dodgy. England took the lead, 3-0 and a slow start from Ireland looked likely. But not this time. Not a bit of it. O’Gara evened the score up with a penalty of his own, and from there on it was all Ireland. England were totally outplayed in one of the most intense first halfs I have ever seen. O’Driscoll was back and although quiet by his usual standards was still hugely influential. Stringer was back and as game as ever. Paulie too was back, I know he hadn’t missed a game, but he hasn’t been playing as well as he can recently. But in this match he was fantastic, back to his best, and Man of the Match, although maybe O’Gara could have claimed the award as he totally dominated the match. But then again, so too could Wallace, he was immense. And with Horgan back to his preferred position, and displaying some GAA high-fielding talents to score that try.

What a day, and what a result, 43-13! Forty-three points we scored. Gwan Ireland!

Then I had to leave the on-screen celebrations and head out and find de brudder in the seething mass of happy fans coming down Parnell St. And headed home to hope Wales would finish off a perfect day by beating France.

It was not to be however, Wales may have gotten off to a good start, but in the end France’s class showed out and they won, playing well-within themselves. Bloody French spoiling our party ;)

The tension is building

Posted by: Fence   in Irishify, Ramblings

And hopefully once half five rolls around there’ll be no thought of politics or history, just rugby, and a win for us. B#5 seems to have found himself a ticket, he is still at school so he gets to go for a tenner! A tenner, when some people are paying well over a grand for a ticket.

Was home early on Friday, on account of working through lunch a few days, and as I wandered through town I took a couple of snaps with the camera, I’ll se about sticking them up on flickr later today, but when I finally got home I caught a bit of discussion about the whole Croke Park/GSTQ controversy, and I have to say, the more I hear about it, the less I understand why people are so upset. As Gift Grub’s Denis would say, Move On.

But there is talk of a huge increase in security around Dublin today. I can’t see anything violent happening at the match. This is rugby after all, but around town? I dunno, if Sinn Féin’s protest[1] attracts the same crowd that had so much fun at the Love Ulster parade, then who knows what’ll happen.

Exciting times
