  • Rachel Nichols - Special Agent Rebecca Locke
  • Adam Baldwin - Special Agent Danny Love
  • Katie Finneran - Special Agent Melody Sim
  • Nelsan Ellis - Carter Howard
  • Jay Harrington - Special Agent Paul Ryan
  • Peter Coyote - Special Agent Virgil “Web” Webster

Does the world really need another crime-fighting show? Maybe not but it definitely needs more Tim Minear shows. And it doesn’t hurt to have more Adam Baldwin around. Unfortunately, ratings, while not terrible were not great, and after only seven episodes it was pulled. Before cancellation 13 episodes in all were made, and recently ITV4 showed the full run, allowing those of us with access to the internet to take a peak.

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.usThe basic premise of The Inside was an elite group of FBI agents solving cases, mainly through psychological profiling. Cases that were chosen by the enigmatic Web. The opening episode saw the death of a member of the team, and Rebecca Locke came in as her replacement. But Locke had secrets of her own, as a child she was kidnapped and held for 18 months, escpaing with no memory of how, or what was done to her. Web usually finds some way of manipulating her into using this trauma to help her solve the cases.

So far, so pretty standard. A pretty blonde agent with a traumatic past. Although maybe hers is a little more extreme than other examples. But what makes The Inside work so well is the fact that it isn’t Law and Order or CSI: where-ever. Instead it was a smart, funny, and dark show that had such potential. Potential it never got to fulfil. Damn you cancelling Fox execs!

The Inside does follow a bit of a pattern in some of the episodes, but don’t all cop shows? The bad-guys have to get their come-uppance, but there were the beginnings of an arc there. There were some great characters, some wonderful dialogue. It deserved more than 13 episodes.

There were complaints in the states that it was overly grusome, and not fit for family viewing. And well, duh! I mean, its a show about seriel killers. Do you really expect it to be lightness and froth? But, despite having rapists, arsonists, murderers slashing pregnant women and leaving dolls behind, and general unpleasantness it actually is not that gorey. It hints rather than shows, although the fat dude was unpleasant to watch.

There have been rumours about a dvd release of The Inside, but at the moment this looks very unlikely, so if you want to watch this excellent show you’ll either have to find someone who has copies, wait for it to turn up on your local tv stations, or find the torrents.

Just because I killed Darla… twice. Did in Doyle, made Kate fatherless, had Angel eat his own father on camera, slice his sister off camera, munch on momma on camera, don’t mean you can’t trust me

adam BaldwinSo I’ve been downloading Lost, and have eps 1 and 2 of season two. I know, I know, bad me for all that illegal stuff, but I’ll end up watching it when it comes out over here, maybe. But as well as Lost I also went a-hunting for The Inside, and could only find episode 4 and later. So I borrowed 4 as a tester. And yes, to see Mr. Baldwin.[1]

Can someone explain to me why interesting shows die? And formulaic, uninspiring, dull shows live on? Hopefully The Inside will be released on dvd at some stage so I can purchase it. Tim Minear.net says that there are six unaired episodes as well as however many got shown. Must go look for more this evening.

Then again, the episode I watched might be a one-off. For the few among you who may have seen the show (anyone?) it was about a kid’s murder. An 8 year old called Harry. Found dead in a swimming pool.

Firefly 1.01 - Serenity

Published by Fence under Moving Pictures, TV

serenityEpidode 1.01
This review will contain SPOILERS for this episode.

  • Nathan Fillion …. Capt. Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds
  • Gina Torres …. Zoë Warren
  • Alan Tudyk …. Hoban ‘Wash’ Washburne
  • Morena Baccarin …. Inara Serra
  • Adam Baldwin …. Jayne Cobb
  • Jewel Staite …. Kaylee Frye
  • Sean Maher …. Dr. Simon Tam
  • Summer Glau …. River Tam
  • Ron Glass …. Shepherd Book

We open with war and death, and the fun of shooting a giant gun. And so, in a way, this opening teaser shows exactly what makes Joss Whedon’s writing so great. The humour, believable. real characters, emotion and let’s not forget the explosions, because, they are important you know. But, as well as introducing Mal and Zoe as ex-soldiers, this sequence is all about Mal. We get to see his faith and belief utterly destroyed in a single moment.

Then we move from the explosions of war to the silence of space. Because, despite the laser sounds and exploding spaceships of Star Wars and Trek, in space there is no sound.

And let’s not forget the dinosaurs.
Okay, they may not be real, but come on, who doesn’t love Wash and his little plastic dinosaurs?

I will admit to not liking the theme song at all on my first viewing. But it really has grown on me. Besides, the credit sequence is great, especially the ending with the ship spooking the horses.

As a pilot I think this episode does a wonderful job of introducing not only the characters, but the whole feel and atmosphere of the series. We get to hear people talk over one another, conversations carry on in the background. There are Chinese phrases, western style phrases, Alliance cruisers, cockney thieves and all blended together in an unmistakable style. There really is nothing else like Firefly out there.

The main plot of the pilot episode revolves around getting the job done; in this instance that involves traveling to a moon in order to get paid. Along the way picking up a few passangers, characters whose own storylines grow in importance. We also encounter the Reavers, and learn, through various crew reactions, that they are to be feared more than anything else in the ‘verse.

And then there is the shock of Kaylee’s shooting. An incident that revewals so much about the crew. Zoe remains business-like and calm; Jayne first instinct is violence; and we get the first inklings of exactly how ruthless Simon can be when his sister is threatened. The shooting also gives us the scenes that really made me love this show. Mal telling Simon that Kaylee is dead, the look of horror on Simon’s face, his dash to see the “body” and then discovering that Mal really is a “mean old man” and has lied. Plus the other’s laughing their asses off up in the bridge.

Mal:We’ve done the impossible and that makes us mighty

Mal:We can’t die, Bendis. You know why? Because we are so…very…pretty. We are just too pretty for God to let us die.?

Wash: “Everything looks good from here… (beat…playing with plastic dinosaurs over his console) Yes. Yes, this is a fertile land, and we will thrive.?
(as Stegosaurus) “We will rule over all this land, and we will call it… ‘This Land’.?
(as T-Rex) “I think we should call it…your grave!?
(Stegosaurus) “Ah, curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!?
(T-Rex) “Ha ha HA! Mine is an evil laugh…now die!?

Jayne: “Ten percent of nuthin’ is…let me do the math here…nuthin’ into nuthin’…carry the nuthin’…?

Mal: …I’ve given Jayne here the job of finding out.
Jayne: He was non-specific as to how.
Mal: Now you only gotta scare him.
Jayne: Pain is scary…

Remember that episode of The Simpsons where the teachers (I think) put on a show, and Bart said that although he “didn’t think it was physically possible, but this both sucks and blows.”
Well Serenity is the exact opposite of that remark :)

I went along with a friend who had never seen any of Firefly before, was totally unfamilar with this whole ‘verse, but after the film she’s heading out to buy the dvd.

It’s got everything in it. Crime, violence, death, guns[1] love, comedy, shocks and surprises, spaceships and a whole lot more.

“Been more’n a year since I had anything twixt my nethers didn’t run on batteries!”

The great thing about Whedon’s work in Firefly and Serenity is that he is prepared to go to some dark places, and there are quite a few in this film. Suffering and death are not absent here. But always he somehow manages to get a laugh out in the middle of those dark moments, and yet without losing the emotional impact of that darkness[2]

There were a few things that I was a bit “hmmm” over, but they were mainly how the film related to the series, and aren’t major problems anyway. I’ve since read that the storyline in the film was originally going to take two years of Firefly, and however much I adored, loved this film I wish Whedon could’ve had those two years, and then some more.

  1. although I didn’t spot Vera
  2. memo to self, get new word for dark in this context.
