I wasn’t too sure what I was going to make of this film before I saw it. War films can be very hit or miss with me, and I’d come across all the talk about the long single cuts, and was thinking, is that just a gimmick to get people talking about it?

And it is a long film, 119 mins, so its not The Irishman but its still two hours.

It didn’t feel like two hours. The film flew by, apart from some of the more tense moments where it seemed to go on forever. And the “gimmick” of the one shot, after a few minutes of distracting me at the very start it really worked to give a sense of immediacy. You felt you were with those characters. It totally worked.

1917 was a great film, it looked wonderful and horrendous. The acting was fantastic, you really believed in all that these characters were going though. None felt like stereotypes or caricatures. Even the soldiers we only saw for a few moments seemed like real people.

I’d highly recommend going to see this in cinema as you do need the big screen for full effect.
