I feel like I’ve been reading this book since forever, which is pretty much true as I started reading it back in February. But it is a collection of essays/reviews so I’d read one and then read something else and then come back and read another. And finally, on Friday, after many months I read the final essay.

It is an interesting collection, but I can’t say as I was ever gripped or enthralled by it. It covers a wide variety of topics within the classical Roman history subject and I was never bored.

But I think that maybe it is more aimed at people who were reading at least some of the books she reviewed, or maybe just knew more Roman history than I did. I know the basics but very little more than that. Beard writes in an entertaining, informative way, but I don’t know enough to agree to disagree with her assessments.
