The Young Victoria

The problem I have with films that centre on the British monarchy is that I’m Irish[1] And so predisposed to dislike them. All that pomp and ceremony that exalts the royal person. Bleurgh I hates it. I’m pretty far from a royalist. So there were a few moments during The Young Victoria when my hackles were raised. But for the most part I really enjoyed this film. It isn’t really a film about Victoria as a queen or even an indepth study of her. It is more of a romance story. So fairly light and fluffy.

Linknotes:

  1. not that all Irish people have this antipathy of course.

I hadn't really thought of that before, but it makes perfect sense that the English and the Irish people would not be as fond of period pieces and other films about the respective cultures as we in America are. Perhaps it has been too long since we were under British oppression, but over here any films set in either country are worth checking out simply because of their nationality.

Oh I still enjoy them. I just don't root for the British monarchy all that often :)
