First Bourne, now Frank, I must seriously be in the mood for action flicks, don’t you think? Of course The Transporter is a lot sillier than the Bourne films. But just as fun.
The first starts off with Frank, the Transporter of the title, driving the getaway car for a bank robbery. A scenario used to show us all just how cool, calm, and collected he is. Oh yeah, and what a great driver he is. And also to introduce us to “the rules” by which he transports.
I could describe the plot and its lack of sense, its plot holes and absurd twists, but really, there isn’t any point, because you don’t watch these films for the plot. You watch them for the action scenes. And there are many. High-voltage violence all around, with plenty of bad guys lined up for a pummelling.
I’ve a bit of a grá for Jason Statham, I loved him in Snatch and Lock, Stock and two Smoking Barrels. He really has that certain likeability thing going on. He also looks great with and without a shirt on. It is more in the way he carries himself, which is probably due to the martial arts, whatever, he is easy on the eyes.
Both films are quite similar. Frank transports something but ends up becoming more involved that he possibly would have wanted. In the first film it is a woman. In the second he is driving a child around, as a favour, when “bad things” start to go down. But as I mentioned, that is all irrelevant, plot is merely an excuse.
So if you are looking for the perfect popcorn film, then I think that either of these two films might be perfect, if you are looking for plot, or character development, or anything other than action and fight scenes you’d be far better served by looking elsewhere.
