I’ve finally decided to get involved in this year’s RIP (Readers Imbibing Peril) challenge, and am going for the first option:
Peril the First: Read Four books of any length, from any subgenre of scary stories that you choose.
So at the very least I’ll be reading
- The Killing Kind by John Connolly – It gas a demonic arachnophile, I think it may qualify as mystery/horror
- The Prestige by Christopher Priest – I liked, not loved the film. But I did love the other Priest book I read a while back. And described as “magnificently eerie” I think it’ll fit the part.
- Fool Moon by Jim Butcher – Urban fantasy. And usually I’d never read the second book in a series without first reading the first, but I don’t think it matters hugely in this series.
- The Road by Cormac McCarthy – Post apocalyptic. I think it fits in the general theme.
- Danse Macabre by Laurell K Hamilton
- Wormwood by Poppy Z Brite
I may also add some more, depending on what books I stumble over between now and October 31st.

Does The Road count as being scary?? I like the idea of this, but sadly I don’t really do scary books as a general rule! I did quite like The Road, in fact I think I read it over the space of a day and a half so it’s probably a good one to pick for the RIP challenge :)
I like John Connolly’s stuff. I presume you’ve read the first two in the series? I thought Every Dead Thing was bloody brilliant. Must read it again sometime. Maybe during the housesitting thing.
I don’t know, i haven’t read it yet TGWSOF, but it is general peril and I think the end of the world fits :)
I haven’t read the first two H, but I have read Nocturnes (short stories) by Connolly and enjoyed it.

Although knowing you, now that I’ve said not to do it, you’ll go ahead and do it just to spite me or show that you don’t do what nobody tells you to do. Pig-headed stubborn cratur that you are.
I tried to sign on for de dole today but they told me I don’t have enough contributions (well, she said stamps, but I’m more up to date than she is. Likewise, I know it’s not called unemployment benefit anymore – it’s jobseeker’s benefit) so can only go for unemployment (jobseeker’s) assistance. Grr. Argh. It’s means tested but since I have €158 in the bank and owe somewhere in the region of €15k, I don’t imagine that’ll be much of a problem.
Sigh.
Well, see, I have The Killing Kind and I don’t have any of his others. I’ll take a look when I’m at the library but I make no promises one way or the other.

So glad you’re joining in. I am one who did love The Prestige (not nearly as much as The Illusionist though) and am looking forward to your review of the book and its comparison to the film.

If it helps, I’m pretty nearly certain Poppa has all of them so I could nick em (I’ll nick anyfing, I will) when I’m at home at suigh an teach (sitting the house???). So start t’other ones in your list first and wait for Every Dead Thing. It’s great. I might even re-read it myself while supposedly bringing it up for you. HA HA! Mine is an evil laugh.
i haven’t heard of any of these – except for “the prestige” of course. they sound cool! especially “the road” and “the killing kind”.

I liked the film Carl, but it also annoyed me in parts. So it’ll be interesting to read the book. I loved his The Extremes so hopefully this’ll be as good.
JP, Fool Moon is one of those Dresden File books. There is also a TV series, but I wasn’t gripped by it when I caught an episode on Sky.
