The O’Reilly case

Published by Fence at 1:32 pm under Current Affairs, Irishify

I was quite surprised to learn that Joe O’Reilly was found guilty last night. We’d been having a conversation about it at work, and most people seemed to be of the opinion that yup, he did it, but that the evidence wasn’t sufficient to not leave reasonable doubt. I haven’t been following the case in all its detail from the very start, I never saw the Late Late when he was on it which seemed to persuade more than a few of his guilt.

Still, the details I picked up from skimming the papers and catching the news made me think that he’d done it. I was among those who thought that maybe he’d be found not guilty, circumstantial evidence and all that. But I guess that mobile phone was enough to convince the jury of his guilt. And I’m glad.

Although you do have to wonder what’ll happen to his two children now. And how they can begin to cope with the knowledge that their father beat their mother to death.

  1. I thought he’d get done for it alright but I was delighted to hear the guilty verdict. There’s always a chance until the verdict comes in. Arrogant bastard thought he’d planned it all perfectly -tis a great satisfaction to think of him being sent down.

Where’ve the kids been for the past while - have they been with him while he’s been on bail or have they been in foster care or what? I hope someone will take care of them permanently - it’s going to be hard enough on them without shunting them around from foster-home to foster-home. Maybe someone on the Callely family will take care of them?

I bought the Sindo (blecch) today just so I could wallow in all the gory details - and get all the info that didn’t get to the jury, like the other affair and the regular re-enactments of the murder Joe O’Reilly put on for his inlaws and other visitors. *Shudder*

  2. As far as I know he has had the children. There are grandparents and what not so hopefully they’ll keep them.

Was reading that stuff about his re-enactments, and how calculating he was, regarding the “finding” of the body. But I went for the ever so classy Sunday Times version.

  3. I wouldashouldacoulda gone for the ST, even though it annoys my arse, but I was buying in the supermercado and it was too bloody heavy to drag all the way home alone with my groceries.

And now, if feckin Titanic hurries up and finishes, I’ll be watching the last episode of ROME. :-(
