Thirteen Irish Phrases on account of it being Seachtain na Gaeilge

  1. ___ is ainm dom - kinda important to get that across. Unless you want to do the old beating your chest Tarzan style. Whichever, it is all good. All the time.
  2. an bhfuil cead agam dul go dtí an leithreas - one of the first phrases you learn at school. Vital, don’t you think?
  3. Cé leis é? - this is another vital phrase for school. Cause whenever you’d see something on the floor you’d have to pick it up and wave it about, calling out “cé leis é? and eventually someone’d reply, Is liomsa é
  4. Éist do bhéal - or listen with your mouth.
  5. Abair leis an lámh, mar níl an aghaidh ag éisteacht - Like, whatevah!
  6. Tús maith, leath na hoibre - never a truer word spoken.
  7. Ar muin na muice - This doesn’t actually mean being on the pig’s back, it means to be winning, or having good luck, or wealthy. Or just generally doing well.
  8. Go n-ithe an cat thú is go n-ithe an diabhal an cat - okay, so this isn’t such an important phrase, but you never know when you’ll want to curse someone do you?
  9. Cén chaoi ‘bhfuil tú - At least in Connacht. Different places have different ways of saying it.
  10. Mo ghrá go daingean tu! - The first line from Caoineadh Airt Uí Laoghaire
  11. Pionta Guinness, le do thoil - Stereotypes. You gotta have ‘em.
  12. Focal dána! - A favourite of the little girls when I stayed in the Gaeltacht.
  13. Ar mhaith leat cupán tae? - Why, of course I would.

Thanks for the Gaelic lesson! Although I don’t think any self-respecting cat would eat anyone!

Thanks for visiting!

Cats’ll eat anything Dragonheart, you should know that :)

Hi Raggedy

Hi Nancy, hope your daughter liked her time here.

Jenny if you move your mouse over the Irish you’ll see the translation, and my half-arsed version of a pronunciation guide :)

Happy T13 Mama Duck.

I understood #13 before I read the translation!
What do you mean, it was easy?!

Now, I need a little more info. Once you’ve learned #2, how do you say: “Where is the toilet, please?”? ‘Cause that’s kind of vital too.

Very cool list for a TT - Gaelic is enchanting and magical - I’m envious of people who can speak and understand it. Congrats on your new look for your blog (I’m not imagining this am I?). I’m all about the writing life this time round. Would love to have you drop by and share your thoughts.

Have a great TT!

Robyn, it is the attempt that matters, not the pronunciation :)

Anne, easy, Cá bhfuil is where is. Leithreas is toilet. Le do thoil is please. So stick em all together and you are good to go :)

Hi Gene, thanks for visiting.

Hi L-squared, that is a favourite of mine too. Course I tend to only ever make a good start and not a good finish.

Happy TT PJ

Happy to be of help Anni.

No, you aren’t imagining the change Christine, there were problems with the old one for some people. So a change was needed. Happy T13

Hi Danica, first lesson, call it Irish :) Otherwise everyone’ll know your American.

I love number 6 (although it will probably get me in trouble at work and in the village) and number 8 is my brother’s favourite curse.
