Thirteen Irish Phrases on account of it being Seachtain na Gaeilge

  1. ___ is ainm dom - kinda important to get that across. Unless you want to do the old beating your chest Tarzan style. Whichever, it is all good. All the time.
  2. an bhfuil cead agam dul go dtí an leithreas - one of the first phrases you learn at school. Vital, don’t you think?
  3. Cé leis é? - this is another vital phrase for school. Cause whenever you’d see something on the floor you’d have to pick it up and wave it about, calling out “cé leis é? and eventually someone’d reply, Is liomsa é
  4. Éist do bhéal - or listen with your mouth.
  5. Abair leis an lámh, mar níl an aghaidh ag éisteacht - Like, whatevah!
  6. Tús maith, leath na hoibre - never a truer word spoken.
  7. Ar muin na muice - This doesn’t actually mean being on the pig’s back, it means to be winning, or having good luck, or wealthy. Or just generally doing well.
  8. Go n-ithe an cat thú is go n-ithe an diabhal an cat - okay, so this isn’t such an important phrase, but you never know when you’ll want to curse someone do you?
  9. Cén chaoi ‘bhfuil tú - At least in Connacht. Different places have different ways of saying it.
  10. Mo ghrá go daingean tu! - The first line from Caoineadh Airt Uí Laoghaire
  11. Pionta Guinness, le do thoil - Stereotypes. You gotta have ‘em.
  12. Focal dána! - A favourite of the little girls when I stayed in the Gaeltacht.
  13. Ar mhaith leat cupán tae? - Why, of course I would.
