A china rat and a Bengal cat and a Bombay cockatoo

Published by Fence under Family, Weekly memes

I’m back. And it a surprisingly good few days, considering the purpose and all. I guess the fact that Granny was 88 and had been in hospital for four years meant that it wasn’t a tragedy.

Tues we headed over for to the funeral home, and there were a lot of people. A lot. The removal to the church was supposed to happen at 8. I don’t think we left the funeral home til around nine because of all the people coming to pay their respects. Even some of the brothers’ cronies turned up. Proper old fashioned funeral behaviour that is.

Still even without the crowds of various unrelated people, the family would make up a crowd in and of itself. Granny was married at 22, and had 12 children. Six boys, Six girls. She has a sister still living, she’s 86 I think. And a brother who passed on when I was very young, I think it was back in ‘95. First dead body I ever saw. I only discovered this week that the reason he was called Brod was because he was the only brother in the family. There were another two girls in the family, but they both died in the fifties of TB.

So, 12 children, and 46 grandchildren. Plus in-laws and great-grandchildren, and neighbours and friends. We had 6 priests do the funeral mass. There was quite a gathering, and of course I knew everyone.[1] Well, we figured out the names of all the aunts and uncles eventually. But a lot of the cousins are very familiar looking so it is very easy to get them mixed up. Dark hair and tanned. Must be some Spanish Armada blood in there somewhere ;)

Talena tagged me in my absence:

  • I am thinking about…
    doing this meme :)
  • I said…
Thanks. Just back from buying some milk and thats what I said after getting my change.
  • I want to…
win the lotto. Even a million would do the job nicely. On a more realistic note, I want to go to bed early tonight, not that I’m really tired or anything, but still. It’d be nice.
  • I wish…
Erm, to win the lotto. Am I repeating myself :)
And that tomorrow is sunny, but not too warm. Anthing around 20 to 23 degrees’d be grand. I’m not made for anything higher than that. And neither are Irish roads. The amount of melting squidgy tar I had to walk around while walking to the graveyard was unreal.
  • I hear…
Arthur McBride, from Planxty’s Live 2004 album.
  • I wonder…
will I get around to unpacking tonight. I’m guessing not.
  • I regret…
nothing really. I mean, everything that has happened has happened, and meant that other things happened, and changing one thing’d change something else. Unforseen alterations, and all that.
  • I am…
going to turn the light on soon. Which means I’ll have to get up and pull the curtains. Either that or be invaded by moths. Although, have to say, that is one of the good things about life in Dublin. Less insects than at home. The amount of moths and daddy-long-legs and flies and bluebottles and bees around at home was shudder-worthy.
  • I dance…
    only when drunk
  • I sing…
when I’m winning. Or along with any number of songs. Also while drunk.
  • I cry…
    rarely
  • I am not always…
as motivated as I could be[2]
  • I make with my hands…
    Nothing recently.
  • I write…
On occasion. Fiction, and short stories. And web challenges
  • I confuse…
Other people with the power of my intellect! ;) Or my errors in spelling. Bound to be one or the other.
  • I need…
A drink of water. But that’d involve getting up and going into the kitchen. And see above re my lack of motivation
  • And finally…
Superman was surprisingly entertaining and enjoyable. Also, never ever ever leave my brothers with any of the following: bullets, shell cases, fireworks, repeating banger type things, potassium, matches, anything containing gunpowder, etc, etc, etc

EDIT: Forgot to tag peoples, so on a totally random basis I’m nominating the following 5 bloggers:

  1. NineMoons to add to her collection of memes.
  2. Kelly, an excuse for her to blog again.
  3. Mal, I don’t think he has been tagged yet.
  4. Anne to distract her from the heat
  5. FM, just because.
  6. And of course anyone else who wants to play along

Linknotes:
  1. that’d be a lie
  2. in other words I can be lazy

No present like time

Published by Fence under Books

Author: Steph Swainston
ISBN: 0575077980
DDC: 823.92
2nd in the Fourlands ‘verse
See also: Library Thing; Infinity Plus review

January 2020 On this soft night I followed the Moren River valley, flying back to the Castle, hearing the chimes of clock towers in the Plainslands villages as I passed high above.

I really enjoyed the first in this ‘verse, The Year of Our War, and while I didn’t like this one quite as much is still makes for a great read. Our hero, once again, is Jant. A member of the immortal Circle, dedicated to serving the Emperor San and the Fourlands, protecting them. Five years have passed without attack from the Insects, and Jant is clean. Although still a drug addict. And with his wife’s affairs, and San’s orders that he, phobic about the sea as he is, is to be sent on a mission across the ocean, well, lets just say that the call of escape and drugs is getting harder to ignore.

Jant is the main attraction in reading this book, his character is so perfectly written you’ll have no problem believing in him. Some other aspects do suffer a little. As the only being with the ability to fly, you’d think he might revel in it. And he does, but this isn’t conveyed very well. There is no sense of delight, or wonder in his flight. Actually, this sort of writting is absent as regards other emotions too. And that is possibly why it didn’t grip me the way the first book did.

Still, worth a read, and I love the cover art too. But I do like my simplicity in book design.

Superman Returns

Published by Fence under Moving Pictures

Dir: Bryan Singer
Writ: Michael Dougherty & Dan Harris, Bryan Singer, Jerry Siegel (characters)

  • Brandon Routh - Superman
  • Kate Bosworth - Lois Lane
  • Kevin Spacey - Lex Luthor
  • James Marsden - Richard White
  • Parker Posey - Kitty Kowalski
  • Tristan Lake Leabu - Jason White

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.usSuperman has never really been a superhero that I was a fan of. Sure, he is faster than a speeding bullet and has saved the world on numerous times, but I’ve just never had a grá for him. So I wasn’t all that fussed about this film, apart from the fact that is took Singer away from X-Men. But I figured, big block-buster movie, might as well take a look.

And I’m glad I did, because despite the fact that it has many flaws this is still a highly enjoyable film with plenty to recommend it. Of course, the central problem with any Superman film is that you know, without a shadow of a doubt, that by the end of the film all will be well. A fact that makes it a little hard to build tension over Supes being in trouble, but this film actually manages to make you feel slightly concerned for the man of steel.

I have to say that Routh does a great job at looking all heroic. And all bumbly as Clark, but Clark isn’t really all that central to the story. This is all about Superman. Superman and Lois Lane.

Lois’s character is a bit bland. She gets in trouble, gets saved. Has issues. But nothing overly intriguing. Although plus points must be awarded for not having a pointlessly annoying kid. Jason, her son, is in some respects another “item to be saved” but unlike in Poseidon he doesn’t do any stupid pointless wandering or looking about and gain more trouble for himself. Spacey does the job as Lex Luthor, but doesn’t have much character. And like many a superhero villian his plan makes no real sense. However Parker, playing Kitty does a lot with her limited screen time.

I’m also thinking that we should get a petition together to try and find James Marsden a role where he isn’t involved in some sort of a love triangle.

All in all, well worth seeing, and despite being 154 minutes long it doesn’t drag, although it probably could’ve stood to be trimmed a little.
