There was a silence in the book-room, not the silence of intimacy but a silence fraught with tension
Nell is in a little spot of bother. An issue of rescuing her brother from his debts and her own expenses means she is in debt herself. And she doesn’t want to tell he husband, Cardross has told her she must be debt-free by the end of the quarter. But in the process of attempting to pay the bill she gets herself in even more bother. And then there is the problem of Letty, her sister-in-law, determined to marry despite her intended’s lack of fortune.
It’s a Heyer romance, you really should know what to expect. Plenty of drama and miscommunication leading to even more drama and trouble. But in the end everything will work out and the couple who are so suited will realise this and get married. Only in this case the couple are husband and wife at the beginning of the novel.
As usual, very readable and enjoyable.

I was going to just bump the music meme post, but then I figured what the hell, I’d create a brand new post, with hints! for the ones that haven’t been guessed yet.
- Sister can you hear me now the ringing in your ears
Okay, this is by a three-piece band. Obscure, imo. They formed at the university of Mass in the 80’s and might be regarded as alt rock[1] though they have gone a little folk at times.
Congrats to Copper-Copper/zilbosco for getting this one.
- If I were to die murdered in cold blood tomorrow would you feel sorrow or show love or would it matter
This is rap. And well known. Technically not the first line, but the first line by the main artist, and I’d regard it as the start of the song.
Copper-copper again with Eminem’s When The Music Stops
- Hey girl, I’ve seen you looking at me, am I the one that you want?
And Irish artist. Not hugely well-known. But fantastic.
NM has guessed the artist, it is Declan O’Rourke
- Light me a smoke, I’ll tell you a story
One of my favourite artists. He’s a solo artist and I suppose he is indie.
NM again with the artist; Tom McRae
- This heartbreak’s never ending it’s like it never happened
This band are from Northern Ireland, but formed in Scotland.
Copper-Copper gets the artist, Snow Patrol
- you’re an american girl red headed eyes blank
An American band who lead singer was addicted to drugs when he was ten. Used to be signed to 4AD. Don’t know why I’m giving this info away, cause it wouldn’t help me
And, yes, it is Copper-Copper again, with Red House Painters - New Jersey
- The ponies run, the girls are young, the odds are there to beat Artist is Leonard Cohen, as Anne revealed.
I surprised that no one has even guessed the singer here. He’s quite famous. From Canada. And to give it away, A reviewer once remarked tongue-in-cheek that his albums should be sold with razor blades. I’ll leave you to guess the song yourself.
Linknotes:
- do not take any of my labels to heart, or een accept them as correct. Music is music is music to me ↩

Regarder, français ! Juste pour le jour de Bastille. Et non mon Français, mais Google. Ce qui signifie que ce paragraphe ne semble probablement aucun raisonnable
Although I am a little surprised that Google hasn’t changed its logo thingy. At least it hadn’t when I checked both google.ie and google.com. I suppose I could’ve checked google.fr, but you know, effort. Any French people living in Ireland might like to know that your Ambassador is having a party to celebrate, or you can head along to Smithfield for a weekend of Frenchness. So I’ve heard.
And in the spirit of celebrating France we bring you…. Even More Zidane zaniness in the form of this Zidane World Cup Headbutt Animation Festival
