Football

Published by Fence under Ramblings

Forgot to mention that the Premiership has started[1] and, as prompted by a post on weenie’s blog, I’ve started a Fantasy Premiership Team. We aren’t doing so good.

I’m in this league, and have just started a brand new one, so if you want to join the league code is 289428-62024

The Wandering Fire

Published by Fence under Books

ISBN: 0586215239
Book 2 of 3
Author: Guy Gavriel Kay

It is always hard to review the middle book of a trilogy. I don’t want to give anything away to those who have yet to read The Summer Tree, but how can you review a book without at least mentioning some plot points?

The Wandering Fire opens, as did book 1, in our world. But this time the character are dealing with the knowledge of Fionavar, and are having to cope with what happened to them there. Wondering did Kim’s last message get through to Aileron and the others, waiting to figure out how to get back.

When I first read this series this was in a way my favourite of the books, mainly because of something that happened towards the end that is wonderful in its subversion of the Tolkien elves sailing from the Grey Havens, and yet at the same time honours that image.

This time, however, it seems much more of a middle book. The difficult in-between one. There is no real beginning as we have been introduced to the world and the characters in book one, and there is no conclusion because we are still waiting for book three. Despite these problems I think that GGK does a good job of keeping the story moving, and creating a certain amount of closure at the end of this story.

The Wandering Fire also introduces us to the character of Arthur, of British legend, and we find out that his destiny is linked to one of the original five (I won’t tell you who). Here, Arthur is known as The Warrior, he has fought countless battles in many different worlds. And always he is forced to endure his curse, that of the triangle between himself Guinevere and Lancelot, and always he dies before the end. Will it be the same this time?

Stealth

Published by Fence under Moving Pictures

Fear the Sky

  • Josh Lucas …. Lt. Ben Gannon
  • Jessica Biel …. Kara Wade
  • Jamie Foxx …. Henry Purcell

It’s 2001 with added explosions and minus any thought. If you want to reduce Stealth down to basics of course :) Personally I kind of enjoyed it. I went in expecting shite, and I came out having seen shite. But enjoyable shite.

The plot revolves around an experimental AI plane that is being introduced sometime in the near future by the US navy. Only things don’t go according to plan, if they did there wouldn’t be any film now would there? Lucas, Biel and Foxx play the three fantastic pilots who fly around the world, much in the style of Team America only without that classy music. They are told about evil terrorists and off they head to blow them up, not a thought in their heads about the fact that they are violating other countries and if someone did the same to the US all hell would break loose. But lets not try to make this film reasonable. Because if you are looking for logic or thought, well you wouldn’t have gone to see a Rob Cohen film then would you?

As you can see instead of the characters, or the poster for Stealth I’ve used the picture of an explosion. Why? Well because that is what this film is all about. Mindless action. Ultra mindless.

Course fans of 2001: A Space Odyssey may be a little annoyed to find that HAL has been transformed into a killer plane called Edi, but what can you do.

Driveshaft

Published by Fence under TV

Was perusing[1] NineMoon’s site and noticed that she has become a Lost fan. I’ve been watching it since it started on RTE (12/13 weeks ago) but is a late-comer and reduced to E4 (who’ve just begun). Have to say I’m getting a bit weary of Lost never resolving anything at all, it could do with the odd “monster of the week” so at least something could be dealt with. Still I do enjoy it, it just isn’t as good as everyone makes out.

Anyways, back to the point of this post[2] NM linked to Driveshaft, a site devoted to Charlie’s band which includes downloads. I’ll have to wait till I get home before I get a chance to listen :)

  1. don’t you just love that word
  2. of course I have a point, I don’t just ramble on for paragraphs without at least something to say. Okay, sometimes I do, but not in this case.
